I'm new to Lipo's (still flying nimh) heres the question. a brushless moter is "rated" at say 18 amps. and you have a 3s1p tp 2100 thats only 12 amps. will this motor damage the battery pack to fly it. or will it just not have as much power as it would with 18 amps?

I guessing here but the ThunderPower 12amp rating is probably a continuous current delivery so running short term bursts up to 18amps is probably ok. I wouldn't leave the throttle wide open for more than 5-10 seconds at a time. I'll assume that your normal throttle setting in flight draws around 10amps.

dunno have not tryed it yet.its just looking at the nippy black
"1-5/8" diameter, 1-1/2" long (from prop backplate to firewall mounting surface), 4mm prop shaft, 2.13 oz. Direct drive design. Use with 8-12 cells and a Jeti 18-3P controller and APC props from 8x4 to 11x5.5. Maximum sustained current 18 amps. Aluminum motor mount included."
would like to use this motor on a AUW ship of 30oz using a TP2100 3s1p. worried it would damage the pack unless used as 3s2p but see lots of posts with brushless motors working with just the 1 pack. also thinkig same with mega 16/15/4 geared 3.3:1

The important thing is not the rating of the motor, but how many Amps you actually draw at full throttle. Just because the motor is rated for 18 Amps does not necessarily mean that you will be drawing 18 Amps on the airplane. You could be drawing more, or you could be drawing less. It depends on the propeller you use and how many cells you use.

Much of the decision making is "philosophical:"

Do you need maximum power from the motor? Maybe you only need to prop it to draw 12 Amps. That would pretty much end the discussion right there: 3S1P is plenty.

Are you just going to burn holes in the sky at full throttle, or do you plan on only using full throttle for short bursts? If you want to burn holes, you probably want to size the battery for 18 Amps continuous, which means a 3S2P (24 Amps). If you plan on spending most of the time cruising around at lower throttle settings, and only need full power for quick vertical climbs and to get out of "oh s***" situations, you can get away with 3S1P.

Unfortunately, you're the only one that can answer those kinds of questions.

OK heres the set up I envision; Watt age ultimate bipe (stated AUW is 30-35 oz) but thats with a colbalt 400 and a sc 1700 pack want to use a mega 16/15/4 with a 3:1 GB swinging a 9x6 - 11X6 prop.On TP 2100 3s1p. want full house preformance (not prophang) but desent hammerheads ,inverted flite, Axail rolls ,loops, hope to be able to do all of this at less than full throttle with this set up. i sthis possable
