motofox -> Saab Vigen Info/Help Needed (12/5/2003 3:42 AM)

Hi, im finishing restoring a saab vigen ducted fan model and being a newbie to jets and ducted fan need help configuring the conards and stuff, I was was planing on using the front conards as Elevator and eilerons at back, is this right. also what degree of down should the front conards be for level flight, just as an indictaion for me. so i know what to expect. also does the term Elevon mean that the eilerons act as elevator as well ?? [8|]
Any info on how these should be setup would be great.
Thanks in advance.

The Viggen I flew along time ago flew fantastic with the canards locked into place and just flown on elevons.
I'm sure it would fly ok with the canards working but I felt I had more authority in the elevon mode.

Hi Motofox
Many years ago a had a Jim Fox JA37 scale 1/10 with Dynamax and OS 91.
It was my favorit aircraft for tree years with more than 200 flights.

I have also 2 Ja37 scale 1/9, the first one was equipped with Ramtec fan and OS91 and later converted to Jet engine.

I suggest that you be careful with the canards because with gear down and fully canards down you need quite a lot of power and down rudder.
The aircraft flies perfect with high angle of atack aproaches without canards down.
The position og CG should be around the front of gear door. If it gets to far back its a nasty model, be careful!

Lovely model you will love it.[:D]

I flew the Jim Fox Viggen also - the general trend was to mix canard with elevator - ie down canard\up elevator. We flew this configuration alot and found it to be really useful in improving the handling in the slow flight envelope. We flew with it permanently switched in...

Lets say this is a warning..
DO NOT attempt to fly your Wiggen on canards only for elevator..
If you do, I promise you will never forget it.

Use elevons, and if you absolutely must have canards to play with, I suggest you to start VERY carefully.
This would be less up than down on the canards (remember to think opposite here), starting with 5-10mm.

When you feel you have absolutely full control, you can start experimenting with larger throws on the canard.
This should then be controlled with a switch on your TX, to make sure the large throws on the canard is switched on then YOU want.

I have not flown a Wiggen, but I have alot of experimenting with a Gripen..

Hi,
If this is the JFM version then would suggest a maximum of 3/8-1/2"" down canard when mixed with full up elevator only, do not use negative (up) canard. This was about right for me and it kept the nose up in turns and landing approach very nicely, btw watch for drag in turns especially tight ones, you need to throttle up a bit as you start the turn to maintain speed. Suggest you make the mix switchable until you get used to it, pm if you need more. Mike

Hi Motofox,

I built and flew the 1/10 Saab Viggen from Einar Johnson which is identical to the later Jim Fox type. It flew very well and I had a lot of fun with it. First it was powered by a Dynamax/OS91 combo and later I installed my homebuilt KJ66, limited to 5 kg thrust which was more than sufficient power. At first I flew only with the elevons and had the canards set-up as flaps which was ok, good and slow landing performance. (Thats where the full-size was designed for!) The only thing I noticed was the tendency to nose-down in a turn, difficult to describe but the model just wanted to fel out of the turn slightly. Later I mixed a bit elevator (max 15 mm throw down only, which is the up-command ofcourse[:D]) which solved the problem, much smoother flying afterwards. This means that I had a bit of up command on the ailerons as well as on the forward canards. The centre of gravity was exactly 10 inch behind the forward bulkhead where the delta wing slots into. I hope this helps, I don't own the model anymore, so I don't have hands-on stuff to look at.

Good luck on the maiden.

Best regards,
Gerald

I to built one of viggen kits and I think you ment 10cm (100mm) behind the front wing bulkhead.
My kit flew great and am building a 2nd not yet started turbine version Now which will have a PST600 for power.

Cheers Pete

Gerald Rutten -> RE: Saab Vigen Info/Help Needed (12/5/2006 10:06 AM)

[8|]....you're absolutely right Pete, should be 100 mm......has been a few years since I had it.......tnx!
A PST600 will suit this model perfectly, most important on this size model is try to keep the weight down and she will fly like a dream.

For me the same.....the Viggen is not the most beautifull aircraft in the world but has a very characteristic appearance overall........

Best regards,
Gerald
