have any of you considered a tail sitter. as far as vtol goes i think it might be the easiest way to do it. though i have not tried it yet, it seems as simple as making a 3d funfly with a larger tale. i am going to try a very simple design. it will be a simple profile plane with a 40" wingspan powered by 2 gws 350D power system each spinning 2 11x4.7 slowflier props. battery pack will be a 8 cell 2100 NIMH. hopefully it will resemble this. http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/AC/aircraft/Lockheed-XFV/info/info.htm

New to the forum but...
My shot in the dark is a tilt wing electric. The first plans are here...
http://www.the-artful-lexicon.com/Fuseplan.JPG
http://www.the-artful-lexicon.com/Wingplan.JPG
http://www.the-artful-lexicon.com/MixerWingMount.JPG

Smaller copies of the same...
http://www.the-artful-lexicon.com/smallfuse.JPG
http://www.the-artful-lexicon.com/smallwing.JPG
http://www.the-artful-lexicon.com/SmallMixerMount.JPG

All my plans are drawn (badly) on 1/4 inch graph paper. I have changed the wing pivot to a set of links that keep the center of thrust alligned better through transition. Someone alot smarter than me said the plane becomes tail heavy as it starts relying on the props for lift... . Makes sense. I'll get the plans updated eventually. Right now I'm still trying to re-time my GWS 400C motors to run in opposite directions...

My second concern with electric just has to be the lower power to weight ratio compared to i/c, , but my main concern has to be the added weight from most likely many large batteries, which won't give a long running time at such a high output which would be required to get a VTOL airplane into the air in a hover in the first place. Another problem which I think could cause trouble, would be when returning to hover from normal flight, the aircraft has to be going very slowly, and then rotating the engines up with the resultant low throttle would cause the thing to simply fall out of the sky.

to solve that problem, just dont pivot them as fast. let the plane gain airspeed.

I'm planning on building a 4 motor VTOL vehicle in which all 4 motors will tilt forwards and backwords, and they will all be controlled by a single servo. to turn, i'm planning on using a rudder, or possibley a tail rotor. all four of the motors will run at the same speed at all times. if anybody knows how to wire up all 4 of the speed controls for the motors, i would appreciate it if you could tell me. also if you have any ideas on improving my design please tell me. Thanks,

Mike

Hi VTOL'ers my nick is "el guada" and would like to know if there is a plan or kit for a Harrier VA-8A or similar?
I'm new to this area and excited to know more about it.
Thanks for any help you can get for me..

Finally got a mixmaster that works with no problems, smooth as silk. Test vehicle rises vertically with no major input from pilot as torque is nest to nill. Conversion to forward flight is a no brainer and transition from forward flight to hover is extremely easy and quite gentle. Its still not foolproof and does take a little time and skill but the drive assembly is basically prefected and I see no further changes or modifications at this time. Next item will be to use the 350 dual GWS drive assembly and convert it to a mixmaster unit as well. Will go brushless as soon as Castle can provide single controller for twin unit. The following site has more detailed explanation of unit and initial test vehicle and first flight photos: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=315250 .

Will be putting 350 unit in enlarged Planiarian of 40 to 44 inch span and about 20 ounces. What is a Planiarian? http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=85034&highlight=Planarian

I am just gonna throw something at you guys. Don't care if it hits any sensible nerves...
1st.- For power try the new thing:
* MFC Methanol Fuel Cells. It works just as hydrogen fuel cells, the only difference is that it works with methanol. What do you know!! glow fuel is already methanol!!! There are laptop batteries that are supposed to hit shelves by 2006

2nd.- For power try the future:
* ZPE energy. If someones is capable to use it.. don't ask, just patent the dam thing!!!

OK.. I'll take one.. But it needs to putout 6000 watts, run for 40 min on one charge
and weigh less than 10 lbs...

That is what my DA100 does right now.... Going to be hard to beat..

Eddie, been a couple of years since we flew jets together but enjoy your work as i always have. Miss the heat of the "Fanfly from Hell" in Shreveport. I have a full bodied XF-1 Convair Pogo working now as I have the contra-rotating prop system working like a top. Just went to Feiago brushless and noticed an immediate 30 percent rise in power. Its a hoot to go vertical a foot off the deck, hold stable hover, drop nose about 5 degrees and walk the dog from one side of gym to another with minimal inputs even to point of transistion to and from forward flight. Starting work on constant speed props for aerobatic work but may also employ design into contra-rotating rig. Little Pogo will only be about 22 inchs long and come in under 10 ounces. Good to see you out and about, need to make a few fan/jet fly-in now and then. Additional details on contra-rotating rig can be found at the following site: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=315250&highlight=convair+pogo .

Hey Ed.. How is it going.. I like the ideas behind your plane and I am glad to see
some one making something new from scratch. Just don't see that to much any more
with all the ARF and all..

Yeah.. The small electrics are really doing amazing things these days... The power / weight
and the energy density are really improving. I am sure its just a mater of time
before electrics will be that good on a larger scale..

Keep up the good work..

Hello Everyone. I have been working on a VTOL for some time. I am a master model builder and have flown RC gas and now Electric. Does anyone have plans to any VTOL they care to share before I release my version. It is great to hear so many people are interested in VTOL scratch built. My pictures should be ready next week.
