I'm new to electrics and any help would be appreciated. My friends and I have built the 3DX foam plane. We all power them with a EPU3753 gear motor(370 mtr with 5.33 ratio) unit from MPI swinging a GWS 1047 prop. We're using the Castle Pixie-20P controller and a Kokam 11.1v 1500ma battery. We have all programmed the controllers to cut out a the same voltage. My problem is that my controller is cutting out after a short time at full throttle while my friends don't. My motor and battery pack become very warm while running a full throttle. Any ideas as to what would be causing this?
Thanks in advance

If separated, do both the motor and gearbox shafts spin freely (no bad bearings). Are you sure the pinion and spur are correctly aligned and not binding: that would put an extra load on YOUR motor? There is a little slop in the two screw holes so very minor adjustments can be made to the mesh. Is your shaft bent? Did you all run in your motors the same way? Did you re-oil YOUR motor bearings after a water run in?

Let us know!

Cheers, Phil

Hi Eagle,

Seems like only a few possibilities.

#1 - your controller may be cutting at a higher "actual" voltage than the others - have you a whattmeter to check amps and volts under load? (If not - run right now and get one, it is an indespensible tool you'll never want to be without!) (no - we don't sell them)

#2 - your pack may have some slight issues, and is dropping voltage more than the others (again - whattmeter would confirm)

#3 - as above - a seriously worn-out motor would draw more current (and depress voltage faster), as would a bent shaft, bad bearing, and etc.

If your motor and batts are getting hotter than the rest of them, I'd look to swapping that motor out for a new one - they vary in quality quite a bit, and you may have a bad apple.
