Ben,

The problem is that the tail plan is made from some very light stock. I have seen the tail plane crease as the wood starts to give way and have seen an instance of half the tail being ripped off in flight, the guy was flying it like a patern ship though. It will go from the point on the leading edge where the bracing doubler finshes. The tail can easily be made heaver, as I have now added 2 oz of Pb added to the tail.

The bracing on the tail is done with ali tubing. Flatten the tube and drill hoes for the bolts. If you drill holes at the forward top point of the fin, it will line up with the trailing edge of tailplane, drill holes and bolt it with some small nuts and bolts. If you brace it top and bottom to form a dimond shape if viewed from the rear, then you will have a very strong tail and the above problem will not show. I have been flying my madness for over a year now with this mod and no problems.

Cheers

Kris

Thanks Kris, that's a good input to use the alu tube, what size did you use? I've just received my #2 Madness and I'll do that. I plan to use an OS46Fx in the front in order to try to avoid adding some more weight on the back.
I remember that my #1 still required some Pb on the tail, even with the rudder servo being back there.

Ben,

I thinck it was about 3 or 4 mm. A good alternative, and neater would be to use some carbon rod epoxied into ali tubs. I am powering mine with a ys 63. The balace point is a bout the same as the os 45 fx and irvine 53 with mini pipe I had on it first.

Cheers

Maddness

Would the YS 53 fz work for it or should I go to the 63, I have the 53 on it rightnow brand new but I don't know if it will be enough for it. thanks

either engine will work well. If you don't have one yet then get the 63. Once run in the 63 will work best with a 13 x 4W or 14 x 4W in this airframe. I would guess that the 13 x 4 w is as far as you can go with the 53.

Oh yes,

Run 20% nitro fuel. The motors do run well on lower nitro contents, but will lack that torque and punch on thottle up.

I've got a Madness but haven't flown it. I still have to put it together. I was on the waiting list since last summer at Central Hobbies, just got mine a couple of months ago. Very lightweight and great quality! I wish the instructions would gave an idea on servo selection. Since I want to make sure I have enough servo torque does anyone have any suggestions? The control surfaces are huge. Not sure on the engine yet, will probably go with a Webra 50, Irvine 53, or a YS 63. I'll take any input on that also. Since these planes are so expensive and hard to get, does anyone know where to get a set of plans for the Madness? I've heard and it does seem the Laser 3D is sort of a copy of the Madness, but I do see some differences. I wouldn't mind scratchbuilding a Madness but it might be better to go with the Laser 3D kit if it flies as well. What do you guys think?

Wade

Wade,
9202s for ailerons and elevators and a 9402 on rudder work really well. 9402s on the ailerons would be even better. TO save some cash, you might look to a less expensive but quality brand servo with the same torque readings. Even the 9202s on ailerons get some blowback.

I fly with a YS63 and have also used an OS50SX which worked superbly also.

I have seen many many Laser 3Ds fly, and I think that it is a fine airplane too. Same set-up would apply.

what is the weight difference between the ys 53 and 63, would it be worth it to change them?

Do you think the YS 53 fz fourstroke would work? DO you think it will hovering, tail touches and do all the rest of the 3d stuff.
Thanks

yes,

I think it will work very well. Given the choice a 63 would be better with a 13 x 4W or 14 x 4 W, but the 53 will be fine with a 12 1/4 x 3 3/4 apc.

I haven't flown my Madness yet, but I can tell you this is one light airframe. I've heard the YS 53 is a powerhouse, so if I had one on hand I wouldn't hesitate to put it on my Madness.
