20 years ago, I bought 2 JR Century VII radio systems (N7C-4SM). 7 channels
I am getting back into R/C planes and cars.

Can these systems be updated or used (new frequency regulations) or is it just better to purchase new systems? If I used the old system, I would probably need new frequencies, batteries, etc. and it might cost as much as a new 4 channel system.

If they are PCM Century 7's, the problem is that there are no currently available receivers that will work with them. If they are FM systems, if I'm not mistaken, that is a modular based system (has a RF module in the back of the case containing the RF deck and the crystal. If so, all you will need to do to the TX to get them back to current RF standards would be to purchase a new module, part number JRTXM** where you replace the ** with the channel number needed. Then you will just need to get a new receiver such as the R700, part number JRPR700**.

As for batteries, if the original batteries are still in the systems, it is possible that some corrosion has taken place and damaged the system. You will at the very least need new batteries, the system may also need cleaning, and it may also be past repair. Also there are other components that may have corroded over time and cause the system not to function as it should. If you would like to try to salvage them, I would recommend sending them in for a check up to see if they are worth spending the money to repair them.

Thanks a million for all the info.
I now have a 6 chanel Futaba radio that I use on a new plane.

1. For my old plane, would it be possible to just get new batteries, change to a new JR receiver, and then use the Futaba transmitter? I didn't think that they were compatible but I may be wrong/

2. If not, where would I send the JR transmitter to be checked out and what might it cost to get a new module? It is a FM unit.

1. No, a JR receiver will not work with a futaba transmitter or vice versa.
2. The address to send JR items in for service is below. A new module generally runs in the $69 range.

Horizon Service Center
Attn: JR Service
4105 Fieldstone Rd
Champaign IL 61822
