Whats your favorite, useful tool used in modeling. Try to list unique items, not the obvious like an exacto knife or drill.

One of my favorites is my Formost balsa plane. Really saves a lot of work. Another is a set of pin vises that range from 1/32 to 3/16 capacity. They are really handy for drilling holes in servo arms, and in other tight places where a regular drill can't go.

I cannot name a favorite as I have several that I use all the time. To be without any of them would make my life more difficult. So here's the list:

Drill Press
Band Saw
Ryobi Handy Trimmer (small router)
Vacuum bagging setup
block plane
Computer with CAD software
Alpha 4 battery charger/cycler

That just to start. I could go on.

4 Ft Straightedge from your local home center.

Check building board for straightness.
Check Aircraft for straightness.
Measure to see if tail is straight for gluing.
Measure to see if wing is straight for mounting.
Check wing / fuse for warps.
Use to cut covering straight for for sunburst trim designs...
Use to cut covering for pin stripes.
and on and on...

My wife's manicure set[:D] Everything I need in a 3x5 wallet. Files, clippers, small knife, sanding boards, small bottle of CA, and that acylic powder is great stuff for fixing canopies and cracks in fiberglass.

My Dremel with the cut-off wheel. I'm always needing to whack something. [:-]

Aside from the norm....
Small sewing kit scissor set. Small n' sharp!!
Small clip-on clamps- .95 cent a piece at HomeDepo, and a life-saver holding parts.
Mini Slide-clamps from Home Depo, a bit more $$, but well worth it.
Craftsman Micro-Driver Set/Craftsman Micro Socket Set.

I like the pecker wood tool. It is that doo-dad for poking holes in covering material. I scheme out complicated covering jobs sometimes, and it does come in handy. It keeps air bubbles from forming under covering layed on covering.

I forget what they call it but that thingy used to transfer the engine mount holes to the engine mount sure has saved me a bunch of money ...........by not having to buy another engine mount to replace the one I screwed up by puting the holes in the wrong place.

Azcat59 -> RE: Favorite tool / gadget (12/10/2003 12:26:14 AM)

My antique Craftsman belt sander powered by an old washing machine electric motor. That 4x36 belt zipping 'round and 'round will bring any piece of wood into submission! My buddies call it "the widow-maker"!

The tools that have imporved my modeling life the most? The dremel with the cut-off wheel and the GP hinge slotter! The rest of it is a good razor saw and the miter box to fit.

dead center hole locating tool, my favorite too.

Mike Bogh -> RE: Favorite tool / gadget (12/10/2003 4:49:32 AM)

Yup, as stated previous the GP Slot Machine gets my vote...followed by the GP Dead Center hole locator...chucks up into my drill for a perfect hole every time.
Haven't had a bad engine mount in along time.

CP140 -> RE: Favorite tool / gadget (12/10/2003 6:25:52 AM)

Not sure what it's called... it's about two feet of flexible metal cable with a plunger on one end.. you push the plunger down and three small "fingers" come out of the other end.... you grab the small screw you dropped inside the fuse, slowly release the plunger and the fingers grab the screw and let you get it out without having to turn everything upside down and shake the heck out of it...

Scalebuff -> RE: Favorite tool / gadget (12/10/2003 8:48:23 AM)

i know what you mean CP140 a great tool for sure ;)

rajul -> RE: Favorite tool / gadget (12/10/2003 9:42:51 AM)

My favourite tools are the ones I bring back from the dead like the metered glow plug igniter that works better than the stock version after some repair and modifications.

I've always heard them called "Mechanical Fingers"

aimmaintenance -> RE: Favorite tool / gadget (12/10/2003 12:22:42 PM)

Yep, only you got the wrong brand in there! I would have to say the GP dead center hole locator for mechanical tools. But my brain is by far the best tool in my hangar.
