I'm looking for some good 3 or 5 view drawings of the prototype Spitfire, K5054. I know that I can order them from overseas but would rather not if I don't have to. Thanks a bunch, Chad Veich.

Hey Chad! still here, finally finished up all the previously ordered fw190 mains and tailwheels, and am working on the 95 degree stuff now..... shouldn't take long to get it done, i've already worked out most of the geometry... (had to buy a scientific calculator to do it!)
will keep you posted

I'm looking, I'm looking......

Hey Chad, check the Camo and Markings I sent you, I think there's a side view in the black and white plates.

Lenny, keep me posted on landing gear progress and send me some pics when you get something solid.

Jaime, I will look at the book you sent but I really need more than a side view. Their were a number of differences in the wing and tail assembly details versus the standard Mk1 production model, not the least of which is the layout of the panel lines, so top and bottom views would be nice. I know they are available, I was just hoping to go the easy route. Thanks, Chad.

Hi Chad.

I will look through my stuff to see if I have anything. You might check with Dave Platt. He has Aero Modeller mags from way back and they have published a lot of three views. My 109 drawing came from them...It was the only reasonably accurate one I found.

Good luck

Jeff

Chad, Check with Bob Holman. I did a Platt Spitfire a long time ago and got a whole package with all of the marks. I tried to find it but no luck yet, if I find them I'll let you know. I have a Reeves MK.9 I'm going to do soon so I need to find them. Don

Nony, I was hoping to be in Chino this coming weekend for the airshow but it looks like I'm gonna miss it. I've seen the Spit several times during restoration and look forward to seeing it fly. I here they may go for some time to climb records with the bird. I talked with Steve Hinton some time ago about the airplane and he was excited at the fact that he would be able to lay the hammer to it from a dead stop. Something you cannot do apparently with the Griffon engined Spit and five bladed prop, not enough rudder authority. This has to be the most unique Spit flying by the way! If I decide to model K5054 I may hit you up for some of those pics. Thanks for the reply.

Jeff, as always, anything you can provide is much appreciated. Had not considered Dave Platt but I may ring him up if all else fails.

Pittsdriver, Holman probably has drawings available by Fred Spring for K5054 but I have several of his Spit drawings and am not that enamored by them. I too had a Reeves Spit kit by the way. I sold mine off before building it but it was a decent looking kit. Definitely more scale than any other kits on the market. However, a friend in California did a glass fuse for the Brian Taylor 83 inch Mk8-9 and I couldn't pass that up. I've got three of those now so the Reeves became surplus to my needs! I can supply you with just about anything you need concerning the MkIX when you are ready to build.

Thanks for all the help guys, Chad.

HI Chad, so you've got one of Vic's fuses?? Glad to hear that and please keep us posted on the progress. Vic entrusted me with the job of making the wing plug, but I've been really slow to produce.Very busy finishing the Holman Fw190 and for the first 15 flights had tons of wrinckles to iron. I still have problems with the landing gear raising up or going out of lock.
I would like to get a copy of that Mk XIX photo that you have under your user name. Is it possible?
Thanks in advance
Jose G.

Hi Jose, I've actually got three of Vic's fuselages! Two of the Mk8-9 and one of the Mk1-5. I'm going to cut down the rear fuse on one of the Mk8-9s and make it a Mk16. I Found one I really like. As for the others, I'm still trying to decide. I really like the prototype and think it would make a unique and historic model. Of course, there has always been much controversy over what color it was so I don't know if I could find enough info to make a contest model of it. Here is a link to some more pics of the Mk19 Spit on my avatar. http://www.planesoffame.org/spit3.htm
It belongs to Planes of Fame in Chino, California. The airplane was donated to them by the Thai government many years ago and they finally decided to put it together in the last couple of years. It's kind of a strange bird but neat to look at. It still has the pressurised Mk19 canopy but they put the engine/prop combination out of an Avro Shackleton into it and clipped the wings. Probably the first time a high altitude Mk19 ever carried the low altitude clipped wing! Anyway, they claim the contra prop from the Shack is much cheaper than the stock five blader and they also say they can put it back stock anytime so why not? I look forward to seeing it fly eventually. Regards, Chad.

ohhhh...I was trying to find a pic of an original XIX with the contra prop, and all I could find was the 5 blader. Well, at least it wont get mistaken for a Mk14 !!

What was the reasoning behind clipping the wings???

Nony, I have no idea why they decided to clip the wing but it is the one thing that I dislike about the airplane. Instead of putting on the original wooden clipped tips that were nicely rounded they just stuck a squared off sheet metal tip on it. You'd think for time to climb records they would want all the area they could get. As far as I know the only Spits that carried the contra prop set up originally were a few of the F.21 variant. I could be wrong about this though. Regards, Chad.

I prefer the elliptical wing myself.

The reason they clipped the wings on the full scale plane was to get more top speed and increase the roll rate.

It lost a bit of lift at high altitude but was easier to land because it didn't float so much on landing.
