I'm building a home with a dedicated workshop. Looking at lighting. Was going to use those 8 ft flurescent llights but they will hum over time. The room is the size of a 1 car garage.
Any ideas??

Pete

Personally, I like the 4' twin bulb (2 x 300W) hallogen lights. I have 4 of them (2400 Watts) in my small basement shop. For working, they provide a more natural light, IMO. However, they do have a number of negatives: They get VERY hot, they use a lot more energy than fluorescents, the bulbs do not last as long, and they are more expensive. They must also be kept clean as the heat can start a fire under the right conditions (e.g. covered in balsa dust...).

The one under construction is over at a friends house that we are building. Hoping to have it done this summer.

My shop....
I finished my basement a few years ago & purpose-built one room for models. The floor is laminate (like Pergo), walls are 1x12 ship lap with cut nails, ceiling is pattern 116 pine (tongue & groove) the cabinets I made myself from pine. Lots of light, lots of storage (pegboard inside the doors & a pegboard lazy susan in one cabinet. I made some drawers that are 48" long inside to store balsa. The hole above the door is an air filter, the cover I made for it fell down & shattered to bits..... I'd rather build planes than another grille! Fridge, TV, and my drums around the corner. I can hibernate down there all winter! These are pics I had on my PC of some projects, but you can get the jist!

Why won't my wife let me take over the formal dining room for my "indoor shop"? the white carpet would'nt get dirty and the antique burrow wood table would make a great layout table!

My shop is 10'x10'x18', and uses six 4' two-bulb flourescents, the sort with a built in reflector. Plenty of light, but then the walls and ceiling are ultra white latex. I've not had any of the buzzing common in the 8' variety.

There is one fixture at the front and rear walls, mounted cross-ways to the long dimension of the shop. Each long side wall has two fixtures in a row. These fixtures are in the $30 range nowadays. I also have a half-dozen clamp-on incandescent lamps with reflectors, and three swing-arm lamps.

No such thing as too much light in a work shop.

plumber,
I take it these florescent fixtures are'nt the cheap $10 shop type. Thats what I have in my garage. Is there a type name associated with these? Would like to switch over slowly to some non-hummers.

The flourescents I have were made by Lithonia Lighting. Get 'em at The BORG. Twenty-nine bucks and change each. Not cheap, but not noisy either.

clean for the moment, cabinets and epoxy floor. Oh yeah it still holds two cars when needed

Also had it insulated and HVAC hooked up. I keep the bigger planes at my field in the shop. Someday I will have a house out there so I can just walk out and fly. Packing stuff up and taking it to a club is a big PITA. Took these
