Can someone with experience suggest the best oil to use for making your homebrew. This is a list of manufacturers that I have found. Klotz, has 100% castor, 100% synth, Castor/synth mixture Blendzhall has 100% castor Kendall Redline Is it better to use 100% castor or do a castor/synth mixture which seems to be what most of the fuel manufacturers do? There are simply too many types of oils to choose from now. Also many manufacturers including powermaster make this claim: ...fuels contain potent rust inhibitors, lubricity additives, anti-foamers and a number of other ingredients to ensure maximum engine life and top performance in every gallon. These things are just standard stuff in the oil right?

I'll start by saying that I've always avoided using any of the current synthetics like the plague (other than a gas turbine oil) because none of them have been specifically designed for our engines. Their primary use is in snowmobiles, chainsaws etc but because they do the job reasonably well in our engines the manufacturers try to convince us that they've spent a billion dollars formulating an oil just for us :D It seems to me that all the "additives" in synthetics are just to try to approach the good points of castor. Put it this way, if castor didn't form carbon or gum up after a couple of years then no one would use a synthetic. So there's a balance between the synthetics and castor depending on what you want. Blending some synthetic will help keep the engine cleaner inside at the expense of less lubricating ability. Personally I think that every new engine should have at least a gallon of 20% all castor run through it before using any synthetic blend. This gets it through the critical running-in period and gives time for a new modeller to get to learn how to adjust the needles properly with some margin for error with an over lean setting.

Well, since most of the fuel manufacturers sell a 70/30 blend of Synth/Castro ...I figured just simply copy their formulation. When I use to make fuel is was a 80:20 Meoh:100% pure Castro oil. Synth didn't even exist back then....and Nitro was kinda a new thing. The fuel manufacturers claim that a mixture of both will give you a better range low to end -- seems to make sense to me. But with castor there is really just one kind (besides purities). When Synthetics theres all kinds. The Klotz websites seems to at least mention R/C....most of the other oil companies don't bother with our small market. That means at least someone is using their product for our application. But, I can't find a Klotz anywhere close to me.... Everyone here sells Blendzall.... The castor is really making a carbon/gummed up mess on my 4 strokes....

As luck would have it there's been a new topic just raised about castor v synthetic oils in a CL only forum. The second reply is the most interesting one because it came from George Aldrich's web site before it was closed down and was written by a lubrication engineer who was also a modeller. That is an excellent article by Bert Striegler. I think the validity of his chemical characterization of Castor in my opinion reading the article makes it a very unique oil that will never be replaced with 100% pure synthethic. Also, I've been talking to some racing folks and they say "Castor" is the best all around hands down....its just dirty and messy in its cleanist form. The cost of cleaning up the engine sometimes equals blowing the engine is what they said. I'm definetly going to use some Castor I just would like to reduce the mix in my 4 strokes. Maybe I'll make a poll in here...even though hardly anyone goes into the fuel threads.
