..for a spad? What (less than .30) engine reasonably competitive and utterly reliable, and does not cost a fortune?

Thanks,

taken from the 'Preditor Modifications?' thread

I've been torturing my Magnum .28xl with 20% Byrons 2000 car fuel with a little castor mixed in, and it runs like a swiss watch. I've probably got three gallons through it, and it just keeps getting stronger. Very reliable and powerful engine, and you can't beat the price. I've also got a bushed Norvel .25 on a Sickle...and those engines are SCREAMERS with a MA 9x4 prop mine was hitting 16,700-16,800 rpm! Watch them fingers! I can't remember what the .28xl tached out at, but I always used APC 9.5 x 4.5 (I think...I'll have to look) with great results. Anyway, I think the Magnum is probably a little more powerful than the Norvel, less finicky, more durable, and a few oz heavier.
reasonably competitive and utterly reliable,
I have Norvels, Irvine, TT, and Mags.

All things considered, Mag .28 XL all the way!

Magnum .28 has been my engine of choice since we started the Raptors three of four years ago and it is still at the top of the list for .30 and under.Take care Jim

Would a diesel motor be allowed it makes more power for the displacement and is lighter??A .30 diesel is the same as a .35 or .40 glow.

Thx foxbat

If the throttle response is fast enough, eerrr, sorry for that slip as there are only two engine speeds is combat and they are full throttle and deadstick. .

Take care Jim

With an o.s. fx or a bb norvel both 25 size with a 28 dollar ky mouse can and a 9-4 prop will fly most any of the current rcca airplaines compettively.

Note without the mouse can you will be in trouble.

I have been flying spads with OS 28Fs and 15% nitro. Its heavy, but leaves 25 size engines in the dust.

OS 25 FX with a $28 mouse can muffler. Starts reliably and nearly as much power as a norvel. $85 engine

Irvine is the better engine. The mag.28 is very dependable for the price. I have knowns some guys to have trouble getting the Magnum to stop with the throttle fully closed but other than that they run every time you need em.
