3D-Flyer -> I want collective pitch! (12/17/2003 5:54:46 AM)

I am wondering why I went with the aerohawk heli now. I have a pretty heavily modified Aerohawk now but I am disappointed that I am unable to get a Collective Pitch head for it. Anyone know if there is one available or one in the making? Helihobby.com has that nice CCPM head for all the micros except the Aerohawk. What gives? Aren't all the Micro Heli's pretty much the same thing?

Shoulda bought a Piccolo Pro is my assumption :P

Unless it's a hornet or piccolo, you'll be modifying the airframe anyway to do a CP conversion. A buddy of mine just bought a smartech bird....probably based on the aerohawk. Anyway, I'd be willing to bet the hornet conversion posted on HH's site would work with an aerohawk. The biggest thing would be shaft length and servo mounting.
If you are considering it, go with the stock hornet CP conversion kit. It's like 75 bucks or so and will do 3D just fine by all reports. Too many problems reported with the 195 dollar red head from you know who.
You'd probably have maybe 120 bucks in a conversion that way...including the extra servo for ccpm.

I am new to the Micro Heli scene, for that mater I am new to RC helicopter. I recently purchased a Hummingbird V.II I know that Century is coming out with a CP version of the Hummingbird. I am a beginer so i didn't bother wit the CP version, my question is can I upgrade my Hummingbird V2 to have CP? Not alot of info on Century's website I thought maybe i could find the answer here.

I appreciate any help

well I've heard on the bbs's both......... there will be a conv kit and there wont be......... so who knows........

agricus -> RE: I want collective pitch! (2/20/2004 5:03:50 PM)

I sure hope they do...

it make this investment worth while

Can u explain about the hornet conversion kit? 75? Im looking into CP to, and i got an aerohawk....

markfsanderson -> RE: I want collective pitch! (2/20/2004 6:53:11 PM)

Just keep in mind that the CP upgrade also means a radio upgrade. I believe in the case of the Hummingbird, it required that you have a Heli radio that supports eCCPM. I believe that the Picollo can work with standard 4 channel, but 3d will be nearly impossible . . .

agricus -> RE: I want collective pitch! (2/20/2004 7:01:44 PM)

so how many channel would you actually need? 6?

markfsanderson -> RE: I want collective pitch! (2/20/2004 7:11:15 PM)

The absolute minimum would be 5 channels. This would not allow you to remotely adjust your Gyro gain, but that's not a big loss - just buy a GY240 or similar and keep it in HH mode. The Collective is a special mix between the pitch and throttle. This relationhip is expressed by throttle and pitch curves. These throttle and pitch curves are only available on heli radios . . but I imagine that you could convince an A/C only radio to do them . . but I wouldn't even try. The JR 6102 is the probably the best low end radio available today. Graphic display, 5 point curves, and eCCPM support. I believe that you can purchase TX only on the channel that the Aerohawk is on (as they use positive shift rx as well - I believe - but not sure). You would also have to by seperate components for CP, because the Aerohawk rx is only 4 channels. The JR 6102 will allow for remote Gyro Gain control (switch in and out of HH and standard rate). Remember, although most people pay attention to the # of channels - that is NOT what makes a better radio better. It is the feature sets, mixes, # of points on a pitch curve (the JR 10X I believe has 13(!?), and you can vary their X position as well!) and etc that distinguish radios. The 6102 has 5 point pitch curves(same as 8103 and 378) - this is exactly what is necessary. I personally believe that if you are going to fly A/C and helis - buy a heli radio.

Regards,

Mark F. Sanderson

PS: Could be wrong about # of points on the 8103 . . that might be 7?

gordongoly -> RE: I want collective pitch! (2/21/2004 5:58:00 PM)

hi, I have the Aero Hawk too..
and i was thinking of buying the piccolo CP upgrade kit.
this head is the same as the piccolo pro head
I'm just 14 so I don't want to spend $300 for a new transmitter..
so I was thinking of sharing the throttle channel with the pitch servo..
would it be possible to fly a bit 3D with this setup?
ore would it just be a bit more stable?

Thanks, Gordon

Smithaw -> RE: I want collective pitch! (2/22/2004 8:01:17 PM)

Well one thing i was thinkin with the aerohawk to make it cp is a flybarless setup. i know they have a lot of these with the hornets but from what i have read everyone has said that you dont have to modify anything really to have a flybarless heli. That is why i put out a post earlier asking if the hornets mainshaft has the same diameter as the aerohawks because if it does you could get the flybarless head like this one http://www.helihobby.com/commonImages/flybarlessHead2.jpg. The only thing with this is you would still need a better tx and you would be wise to modify it so it had 120degree servo setup. Does this sound right to anyone or am i just completly wrong??[8|]

katipo -> RE: I want collective pitch! (2/23/2004 9:04:43 AM)

Well I've just taken a punt and ordered the Piccolo CP Upgrade kit from Hobby-Lobby with the intention of converting my Aero-hawk. I've got some engineering friends who are also into micro Helli's and have offered to make any parts that I need to get it going. I will report back in a few weeks to let you know how we got on and what the modes where. Wish us luck, Cheers.

gordongoly -> RE: I want collective pitch! (2/23/2004 1:22:18 PM)

katipo, are you also going to fly the piccolo head with a 4 channel transmitter?

let me know how it goes...[:)]

Gordon

markfsanderson -> RE: I want collective pitch! (2/23/2004 4:28:50 PM)

Gordon,
Sorry, but it looks like you'll have to cut lawns/shovel snow/whatever to get the 6 channel transmitter. The term '3D' implies inverted flight and etc . . . To do this smoothly without 5+ channels would be next to impossible. I personally can't think of a way . . . I don't believe that you'll have to spend $300 . . I see on ebay the 6102 going for ~$180-$224.

gordongoly -> RE: I want collective pitch! (2/23/2004 7:46:02 PM)

Mark, this is what hobby-lobby says:

Convert your Piccolo with this Collective Pitch upgrade set to unlimited aerobatic flying even with a 4 channel transmitter! Upgrade includes all new rotor head parts including new swashplate, specially designed CNC-milled Rotor Blades and 10 ball bearings. Use a servo ''Y'' connector harness (HT0096) with a 4-channel radio to allow the throttle and pitch servo to share the throttle channel.

and UK flight says that it is possible to fly 3D with a 4 channel transmitter just use a ''Y'' connector harness and share throttle with the pitch servo.

by the way that 6102 looks nice for $180.. but I think it's a bit difficult for me cause I'm just 14 and I'm dutch so my English isn't so perfect..

Thanks, Gordon

propnut10x6 -> RE: I want collective pitch! (2/24/2004 10:44:18 PM)

Gordon
4 channel radio using throttle and collective with a Y-harness sounds like a handfull. Check out runryder.com. A website dedicated to Helis. Watch out some people get rough (brand bashing) overthere.

Dj Kriz -> RE: I want collective pitch! (2/25/2004 8:15:07 AM)

I dunno 4channels flying 3d

Yes Uk Flight seem very keen to fool people

I'll keep it short, going from conventional flight to inverted flight would need your rotor blades to be pitched the other way.

You would pull the Throttle stick which ever side its on, "down" .If your blade pitch is sharing your throttle channel then reversing the blade pitch will slow your rotor speed at the same time.

If you added the Ikarus fly wheel and you were at a fair height with a battery that about to die I guess you could do an auto rotation still[:)].

bdesh123 -> RE: I want collective pitch! (2/27/2004 5:54:02 PM)

HI guyz i am also new in Micro heli.. but did some research cp.. I think HI-RPM Piccolo 3D Core - For Extreme Flying Is a better deal. the parts are solid. less weight / flight is better and easy to control and dont need CCPM option on TX, which is expensive. And also . not much moving parts. they have alu rotor grip now. I dont think u will be able to lose or break parts out of this package. this is a solid investment.... but u need 6 ch for all CP, CCPM and 3d flying
good luck let me know what comes out of it.

helisfreak -> RE: I want collective pitch! (2/27/2004 7:03:24 PM)

I make a mistake back then when i bought my JR radio for my flying wing... I bought a JR 5 channel XF421ex, which has flapperon, v-tail and delta mix... And now i regret why not 6 channel so i can use it now for CP helicopter... god d... Anyway, anyone have any idea if i can use this radio for a CP 3d stuff? any of those mix can be use?

markfsanderson -> RE: I want collective pitch! (2/27/2004 7:14:02 PM)

Sorry about that . . . . My only recommendation is to ONLY buy heli radios . . . trade that one in and see if you can make dent on the bill . . .

Mark F. Sanderson

hi, im new to this and i just bought an AEROHAWK.it didnt last long[&o]and i dont want to keep on buying spare parts so i was wondering how much it costs for a MS Hornet if i got it of the internet[:D]
(please tell me how much they cost so i can start saving up now!)
