how is everyone doing? well, i'm a newbie and my father-in-law is getting me a T-Maxx for Christmas. i honestly don't know much about these things and i won't even pretend to. my father-in-law seems to know a great deal about them, but i wanted to learn about it from others as well.

now, i'm pretty much an all out kind of guy. if i get something, i want it to eventually be the fastest/baddest thing around (eventually). i have a real tough time leaving something "stock".

i know 2 things that i want, but not sure what to get.

1. a really fast engine
2. good suspension (i will use the car for off road use about 80% of the time)

What would everyone recommend and about how much would it be? (assume $500 or so to spend).

Also, what else will need to be upgraded w/ this kind of engine (i.e. will the gears/transmission/etc hold up)?

thanks for the help and i hope to become a regular here. Merry Christmas!

Scott,
first, welcome to RCU. I been here since April, and there is vast amounts of info if you know how to search for it.

I love my T-Maxx. Had it since May and it just rocks! As far as upgrades... There are a few motor choices to go with. I believe the Sirio .18 is a direct swap, as well as a few more. DO a search for T-maxx engine upgrade and you'll find lots of information about it.

The beauty of the T-maxx lies in the aftermarket support. MANY companies manufacturer parts that are a direct fit! I would peruse eBay and you're bound to find deals.
I've kept mine pretty much stock, it's hard to allocate money to the maxx when I got planes and other projects going on.

Best piece of advice I can give... Be careful on the pavement. Them curbs eat up maxxes super fast. And they come outta nowhere!

The first thing your going to want to do to it (at least from what I've learned from you so far) You will want to get the XTM 24/7 Conversion kit for it, and a good Big Block (BB) motor. Try either the XTM 24/7 or a Picco .26 Both are Awsome motors. This would be a great start for you and your T-maxx. The Engine will cost you <$200 and so will the conversion kit. Also you will want to upgrade your Steering Servo, Try the 188oz JR servo.

from my experiences i do not like conversion kits because the truck wasnt built to handle all tha power and torque if you want a bigger big block engine get a savage or any other 1/8 scale truck. i would strongly suggest ANY rpm parts. and a fantom .18 engine. it has 1.95 hp compared to teh stock 1.3 it will be a big jump. then i would suggest mip cvds because with a larger engine you will quickly twist the axles on the maxx. upgrasde to metal. RPM makes plastic parts that are very light and have lifetime warrenties. they are also much much cheaper and stronger than aluminum. but if i was you I would not upgrade anything for a while and just leave it stock untill you get use to it. and if you drive it really hard stuff might break or if you run into a curb mailbox etc. so keep some money aside for parts. the fantom engine will set you back 150 dollars and it is rated one of teh best for the t-maxx right now it is a direct bolt on and you can still use your e-z starter on it. if you get it i would pick up a sirio big bore pipe or fantoms pipe for even increaed air flow. then a motor-saver air filter. if you are gonna do some serious bashing take a look at this roll cage it is the sickest cage for the t-maxx and it is very strong. it strengthens alot of chassis parts on the t-maxx to make it stronger and it protects all the insides very well. there is one sitting under my tree as we speak. my old one is pretty thrashed lots of scratches. and my truck lost its signal and it ran into a wall going 45 and bent teh cage a tiny bit now you cant get it back on. but i think im the only person who has ever screwed up that cage it is very solid and only weighs 9 0z i hope i helped any more questions feel free to ask me or PM me

wow, thanks for all the help...i like the idea of getting used to driving it first. no sense spending good money on expensive parts if i don't know how to drive it yet. also, i'll probably take your advice on the roll cage as i will be jumping it a lot and doing a lot of off road driving.

what is the difference in the .26 Picco engine and the XTM 24/7?
how much is the roll cage mentioned above? i didn't see a price on the web page.

The roll cage will cost you about $140

The Picco .26 is an Ofna motor. it has about 2.7hp Approx $165

The XTM 24/7 or .247 motor has 2.6hp Approx $145

They are both great motors, I have had both. I am currently using the Picco .26 They are great BB motors and will add tons of power to the truck.

I know there are people who will say not to do a conversion. But, If you look at the trend in trucks going on, they are moving away from the Small Block motors to the BB motors. In order to do that to a T-maxx you will need to do a conversion. there are 2 kits that I know of out there for this. One is the XTM, the other is Dynamite. The Dynamite kit is sold for less than $150.

But ask anyone here for help on whatever you need. You will get it. And WELCOME to the RC world.

the roll cage is 105 dollars. not 140. and i have nothign against conversion kits its just that they cost alot of money. after you add up teh conversion kit the new engine the cvd's which will break and a few other little things its pretty pricy. so ill just stick with my fantom and sit here and wait to win teh lottery someday so i can afford everything i want

pray that your uncle has deep pockets lol...

i bought a tmaxx back in july for $512. since then i have spent $1500 more or so keeping it running. that includes fuel, glow plugs, upgrades... anything from my hobby shop. its fun, but it empties your pockets FAST. i have the fantom 18 and a sirio big bore pipe. it makes the truck scream, it is a great upgrade.

It all depends on how much money you have. I have had mine for about 6 months and broke tons of stuff........(but I also bash the hell out of my baby) I love my Maxx. Me and about 5 buddies all got ours together and we are having the time of our lives. We have petty much snapped, bent, or mangled everything on that truck and had a blast doing it.
Now I am staying with plastic bulkheads because I had Aluminum fronts and bent those on a runaway into the curb while I was tuning. My buddy had aluminum a-arms and kept snapping his chassis (even the 4mm ones). Once he got RPM he hasn't snapped a chassis since. Just because it is aluminum doesn't always mean it is better. Remember, Aluminum is heavier as well ,so if you are looking for air, all that expensive bling bling will weigh you down. I have talk to alot of guys around the tracks too that race all the time and most of their trucks are stock with a few upgrades were it counts.
Finally I would say go RPM a-arms, maybe aluminum shock towers, upgrade your steering bushings to bearings and see how that does. Oh also I have a motor saver air filter and noticed considerable increase in engine performance.

im with him but i would even go with rpm shock towers. although they only have the stock mounting position. aluminum shock towers usualy have more mounting holes for better suspension tuning and they look cooler.
