Any idea what to use for powering a Jr Falcon? I plan to build it soon.

I have one that I scratch built and it runns on a Wattage 370 from the Sukhoi su-26 on 7 cell 800 mah nimhs. If you want to see a pic

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/Thanks_JETRANGER%25__This_is_what_I_built_from_the_planes%25/m_1328326/tm.htm

It weighs in at 18.25 oz. I have an 8X5 APC e prop on it. I fly for about 5 minutes on a charge.

That is a nice looking plane Dru.
Is it the same size as the original Jr. Falcon?
Thanks.

It is built from a copy of the original Jr Falcon plans. Span is 36 inches. I would love to have a set of the Senior Falcon plans. I can remember the Jr falcon, Falcon 56, and the Senior Falcon, have I missed one?? This plane had the call out on the plans for the 1 channel escapement. It was suppose to weight in at 16 oz on the old plans and I have it set up with 4 channel and steerable nose wheel. I could get it real close to 16 oz with a set of Lipo's. I could have saved a lot of weight if I would have tried. I just built it without doing any type of lightening.

I will duplicate one from a partial kit I have.
A 16 oz plane should fly with at least 8 oz of thrust.
I would like the ailerons but not sure.
The steerable nose wheel is a must, also 1200 e-tech will be used and maybe 3 cells.

Mine flys great with 4 channel. It does very smooth rolls and inverted flight is good. I made up the nose wheel mount out of brass tube and brass sheet. The motor mount for the electric motor would not let me use a 1/2a nose wheel from Dubro.

I just built the wing with a sub trailing edge so I could use alieron stock for the alierons.

I am not sure how much thrust I am getting, but it is air borne in about 15 feet and has a 60 degree climb out at 4,000 feet ASL

Dru-- That sounds great.
I have the tail done and starting on the wing. I am modifing the wing spars and using web sheeting between the ribs. What did you do here?
Thanks for the nose gear tip. I will do the same.
I am guessing about 13 ounces using 1200 mah e-tech Li's. GWS 300, 4/1 gears, 7060 prop, min servos, still dont know about ailerons.
Thanks for the info. I am getting excited about building this fine old bird again.

I built the wings per plan. It has the large thick spar up front and the smaller one in the back. I did not put any sheeting on the wing execpt the center section.

I flew it a truck load this weekend. I got to where I was keeping it air borne for over 10 minutes. I would take off at 1/2 throttle and then get to about 100 feet and throttle back to just enough power to maintain altitude. It is a very nice easy flyer. I did fly it really hard one flight. Lots of WOT and rolls. spins, loops, stall turns and the flite was over in about 4 minutes.

The fuse is built with 1/16 balsa sides and just a doubler around the wing saddle. I did not even add a doubler to the nose area. I did use a 1/8 ply fire wall. The tail is built per plans with no changes in balsa call outs.

If you want I can take pics of mine to show you how I did it. It might give you some ideas how to improve what you are doing and to make it lighter then mine. I may end up getting a small brushless and then go lipos.

My wing is complete. It was a real chore to build because I cut all new ribs and re designed the spar. I wanted it strong enough to have ailerons.
Now for the fuse. I will take your advise. I wish I had more time to work on it.
Some great memories.

I added alierons to mine and it is just about per plan. I just added a sub trailing edge and sometappered stock for the alieron. I am using two servos for the alierons and that makes setu so much easyer.

I hear ya.
Using one servo for ailerons.
Thinking of how to build the nose gear steering block. Either brass sheet or solid aluminum.

Just cutting out the ailerons.

For the nose gear I used a piece of brass tubing and brass strips. I bent the strips over the tube and solidered them together. I kind of looks like an "H" but side ways. I the drilled holes for the mounting screws in the ends of the strips. I solidered a piece of the strip onto the nose gear, slide the tubing with the strips on it on and then solidered another small piece of tubing on the end of the wire to keep everything from coming off. I can take a pic of it if you want. I used some really lighte foam wheels from Dubro. I heated the wire landing gear up with a heat gun and used a washer and some hot glue to hold the wheels on. They have been on for over 30 flights so far. Cheap and light.

I am just waiting for you to get it done so I can see it. I like the old planes for some reason. I think they have character then the sleek, narrow, ulra light weight hover bats.

Just ready to cut out the fuse parts.
I have been away from this for about 12 years. Forgot how much fun it was to sand through wing sheeting, round off leading edge, break every other rib when sanding, jab an x-acto knife into the thumb.
Having a great time and good memories. I will keep in touch and sand photos.

If you don't break a few ribs now and again you are not building It was a good relaxing time when I was building it. It went together really well.

It is ALL about having fun, even if you have to wear a band-aid.

Here's a link to a pic (3 tries to upload here resulted in 3 forced reboots) of my original 1967 kit that I got off Ebay and built last fall. It's 3 channels, uses 2 naro servos with pull-pull on rudder, steerable nosewheel, Speed 400/8 cell KAN 1050's/Cox 5-4 prop.

I used a Dubro 1/2A steerable nosewheel kit screwed onto the back of the firewall, which I remade from liteply, as the original was heavy and die-crushed.

It flies really well on the Speed 400, with any rudder-elevator type maneuvers easily done at 3/4 or less throttle.

AUW is around 17 oz., IIRC. I taught myself how to fly one one of these in 1978. Flying this one brings back great memories.

OK, I am almost done with the fuse. I found that the wing is 3/4" longer than on the plan due to the LE and TE I used. So now the incidence looks off. I am doing the nose gear a little different and will tell you about it later. Thinking about a 350 DD, 6030 prop. Also Li's need to put out 11 amps.
I can remember building at least 5 of the jr. falcons and 3 jr. skylarks. These kits should be in the model plane hall of fame.
To be continued----------

just to let you know, the Jr Falcon kit is available now from Early R/C Models. I will find the link and post it.
I built one of those in 1967 but never flew it. The escapement radio quit working before I could fly it. I have no idea what happened to the plane.

Looks like he has the Sr. Falcon too!

Here is how I did the steerable nose gear.
When I figure out the engine mount, motor on the way, I will finnish the fuse and start covering. It's starting to look like a jr falcon now.

I was not able to make a nose wheel bracket like that because the way the Wattage geared 370 mounts. There are 3 screw holes that you use to mount the gb/motor combo. Mine looks like that but is made out of brass strips and tubing. The tubbing acts like a bearing and a strip goes across it so you can put two screws through the strip to mount it. The way I did it made it thinner so I did not have to shim the motor out any farther.

Dru.

P.S. Looks GREAT!!!!

Thanks Dru.
It's comming along. I used a brass tube straped down with nylon clamps. I bent the 3-32 nose gera in a vise, easy to do, so I didnt use any of the original parts.
I'm now thinking of a dual ips motor with 4:1 gearing and a 8043 prop. Should give 7 ounces of thrust. I estimate my auw will be 13 ounces. I dont think I will have ailerons.
Also, a berg receiver, 1200 e-tech.

Mine is a little bit heavyer then that with the 7 cell 800mah nimh pack and 4 channels. With the motorgb battery combo I have some where around 15 oz of thrust so mine gets off the ground in a hurry. I throttle back to about 1/3 and just cruise around for 7 minutes.

I want to fly it like an old timer. Thats why I dont need ailerons. Man, you have plenty of thrust. My weight savings is in the motor and li's I'm using. Should fly ok.
Will be in touch.
