I have a Losi Mini-T and I have a problem. After talking to a Horizon rep and the car guys at the local hobby shop, I purchased a 7.4v 11mah Thunder Powder lithium battery. Wow, the little truck runs great with that battery but I'm wasting the stock motors after 8 minutes or so of clean, indoor, varied throttle use.

What happens is that it just seems to lock up (lightly), and then the mounting plate gets very hot, that's it. I can then easily break the lock up free by moving the rear tires fwd but the motor is dead. I have burned out 2 like this and I wasn't thrashing on it or anything.

Questions:
1. Is the 7.4v lithium too much for the stock motor. The car guys and Losi service rep tell me the battery works well in the stock setup. Is a 7.4v lithium that much different from a 7.2 NiMH that they sell for the Mini-T?

2. The hobby shop guys told me to try a different motor pinion with fewer teeth. They said whenever you go up in voltage you should decrease the pinion teeth.

3. The Losi rep told me that the pinion and the slip gear are probably meshing too hard. He said they need to be more loose than normal.

Any insight, lessons or explanations for this car newbie will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Quigley

those explinations sound goood.... when u get a replacment motor, run it with the regular 4 alkaline battery. It just might have been that u got a defective motor.

I'm on my 3rd stock Mini-T motor and it's lasting!!!! I'm using a 7.4v 1900mah ThunderPower Lithium pack and I was told, by a good source, to be patient for the landslide of motor upgrades early in 2004.

I adjusted the motor so the pinion gear was somewhat loose. That seemed to fix the eminent motor burnout with the 7.4v battery. Since I get 30 to 45 minutes of runtime on the lithium pack, I let the motor cool off every 5 to 7 minutes of runtime. I put the Mini on a small fan to cool it down quickly. Once I get a better motor, I hope to run a lot longer. I also kept sustained full throttle running to a minimum. I probably have 3 hours of runtime out of this motor!

Awesome! I will try running a bit more gap in my gear mesh with the next motor and see how it does.
