I recently aquired an st charger but am not sure how to configure the settings to safely charge my battery backs. untill now i have only used the wall chargers supplied with my radio systems. I am completley ignorant to the term c rating. I have an 1100 , 600 nicad pack and a new1650 nmih all are 4.8 volt. I dont understand how you arrive at the correct amp setting. The charge rating on the charger goes from .01 to 5.0 amps
which rating do I select?
Thanks,Wings

If these battery packs have the standard lite wiring that comes with most rx battery packs, I would not charge them over 1.2 amps. If you do you may experience over-heating and possibly melt the wiring or damage the battery pack itself.

It really depends on how fast you want to charge them. I would recommend charging them in the .5amp to 1.0amp range. If you want to discharge them I would use the 300 mah to 500 mah range. I normally charge my 600 mah packs at 100 mah to 300 mah unless I am in a hurry then I will use 500 to 600 mah.

Also you will notice the ST has a feature that will allow you to set a limit on the maximum amount of charge the battery recieves.
I usually set this at 50 to 100 mah above the stated mah rating of the battery pack. So on a 600 mah battery pack I set this at 650mah.

If you get some very large packs or battery packs with heavy duty wiring you can then use the higher charge settings of 2 to 5 amps.

The ST is fairly new to the market...........so far they seem to be accurate, quality chargers.

Hope that helps.

I guess I dont understand how you convert the 300 or 500mah to the amps you select in the charge or discharge rate menu.

300 = .3 C
500 = .5 C

So a your standard 600mah 4.8v pack would be;
NICAD
1.2C .5D 650

NICAD you can charge at 2 times the rating so 1200 or 1.2C. Discharge CAN BE at higher rates also if you want, just have to be careful. I think you can discharge at double mah.

NIMH batteries charge at 1 x rate so a 600 mah would charge at .6C.

There are 1000 milliamps in 1 amp. So on your Superturbo it breaks down in 100 millamps increments. 100 mah would be .1 on your Superturbo. 1 amp would be 1.0.

Also when you charge Nimh batteries be sure to select the battery type. I turned up the peak sensitivity from 3 to 7mv for nimh and from 5mv to 10mv for nicads. I have found I get a more accurate charge.

Its best to create programming files for your different battery packs.

After you use the ST for a while you will find it a snap to program and operate.

Thank you for the information. Your explanation has enabled me to understand the operation of this charger.
