The term usually means that the ailerons are at the outboard section of the wing. There is a calculated % of the total wingspan that a correct barn door should constitute. I will find out what that % is and get back to you.

General rule of thumb for barndoor ailerons is length = one quarter wingspan, width = one quarter chord, so area of one aileron would be 1/16th of total wing area, both together would be 1/8th of total wing area.

another nice spad design can be found here:
http://www.zipworld.com.au/~dazb/dAzi/dAzi.html
it is the same dimensions as the zagi, but made of coroplast. I have found that when using it as an electric, it benefits greatly from some carbon fibre spars. Otherwise, using 2mm coroplast, it folds under aggressive maneuvers. I really mean it folds. I had one fold in half, fall 50 feet, and then unfold and resume flying. That one has since been retired, and pointed out a major weakness. a couple of carbon arrow shafts have remedied that on the next model. There are tons of designs out there, so I am not saying this is the best. However, I have tried the mugi, but I dont' have any slopes, and my electric mugi was poor at best. The last dazi I made flew just like a Zagi, until it folded. I hope this one turns out as good, flight wise. It will be much stronger for sure. In answer to the very start of the post, what makes them fly so well? I have no idea, but they do.
