Check out rcscalebuilder.com. They have a real nice B-17 build underway by a guy nic-named Heavy Date. Its in the forum for Don Smith Plans. Its a beautifull job and has to be seen to be believed.

check out my club websight www.condorsrc.com for pics of a b17 build. this plane is 5 yrs old with 310 flts. uses g23s robarts 16-8 3-blade graupners. flies great. tough to transport. flew in halftime at top gun. great bunch of guys.only problem encountered was strength of tailwheel assembly. glad to answer any questions.

Here is my start on the fuse..Im doing it a diffrent way as you can tell...That is a 1.25inch tube that each former is slid onto..It cannot be crooked..Works great..I redrew each former on a cheepy cad program from office depot and then printed and cut Michael

And here are my work horses..OS 91 fs with the pump.Notice the long exhaust pipe..That will go down the side of the nacs and exhaust to the rear..Michael

B17mik, Interesting idea and looks great. Just curious, do you plan to remove the tube or will it stay in place?

No ..the tube will go because it is solid steel..If you look at each former,there is three 1\4 inch spokes and those will be cut out and then the tube will slide out.But i will do this after a good part of the fuse is sheeted..Michael

Yeah, I guess its not a good idea to leave solid steel in there, lol...I guess I assumed it was a light aluminum tube. Great idea though...would be interested in following your progress.

Another shot. The waist gun area ,I wanted to do extra special,so I created true scale formers as on the real airplane with my CAD program..It is easy to draw the circles you need ,You just need to know the deminsions to scale..Anyway when you lookinto the window ,it will look a lot better than leaving the plan formers in there.. Ok ..let me tell you about the way I am doing this build..If you look real close to the picture on this reply you will see a steel tube that is bent in the middle..When you look at the plans of DS you will see that the fuse is bent upward from the midpoint of the plane..So the tube was cut and then rewelded at the same angle as the plan is..I got the idea from a gentleman named Flydoc on another web site but he used a piece of 3/4 inch waterpipe to do his..Now for the way he bent his fuse upward was he redrew each former at its center to compensate for the upward tilt ..The waterpipe is straight and each former is made to fit off center to make the bend in the fuse..But in using a round tube to hold the formers in place how was he keeping the formers from spinning like a record? So I came up with using a 1-1/4 inch steel tube that is square and it cant spin that way..The tube must be supported in the middle as it will sag over that distance..As for the CAD drawings,just to let you know that I have redone a lot of the original formers..For example..formers 17 thru20 are gone and I replaced them with 7 diffrent ones to scale So the waste gun area is just like the real plane to scale..It will look alot better when you look in the windows..In comparison to the plans that have these inch thick formers that dont look very good...I am doing the same thing in the cockpit area and the real place to do it is the nose area..On the real plane there are 10 formers that make that area up.. So formers 1thru 4 are going to be redrawn to scale with 10 scale formers..A TON of work but it is worth it...Michael[:)]

Mike, Actually, using a round pipe worked quite well. There was no problem with the formers spinning on the pipe, once the stringers were inserted. The advantage to using a round pie was that it allowed the fuselage to be rotated on its axis, which was very convienient while planking and sheeting the structure. Best of luck with your B-17

Thanks Flydoc for the response...When I saw your plane in the stage of the water pipe on the web , I was wondering about the twist factor,But from looking at your plane and the way it looks now,I see that the water pipe worked great..Anyway the square pipe is working great also..Planking will be easy because right now I can plank the top and starboard side and then the port side by just turning it end for end and then the bottom by simple flipping it..I had a bit of a sag problem with just the lenght of the pipe being held at the ends so a support for the middle was made..Is this what happened to you? Even with a pipe...round or square, I suggest that you don't plank one side or the other (or top then bottom). It'll lead to stresses that will pull the structure when the keel is released. When planking, equal strips should be placed on opposite sides of the structure to minimze these stresses. My B-17 was built in the clamshell tradition and planked "in the air" with no problems. Yep yep yep...Thank you Mitch..excelent idea on the planking..A little on each side would relieve the stress. If it was planked on one side and then the next,I could see it pulling to one side..Thank you..Here is a picture of former #22..Drawing on a CAD program is easy if you never did it..I payed 59 dollars at office depot for mine and it has more features then I will ever figure out..Just learn what you need to know and it is nice to be able to modify a certain plan and get it on paper...I am going to install 2 stab saddles on this plane because of the square tube was in the way..That is the two black bars on the drawing..Michael

Mike, The pipe I used as a fixture was a thick walled gas pipe. It was rigid enough to not require support in the middle. As far as planking on alternate sides symetricaly, that is good advice for conventionally constructed fuselages, but unecessary for my method, because the fuse was completely sheeted before it was removed from the pipe. An added bonus is that full sheets of 1/8x4x48 balsa could be used to skin the srtructure in all areas except for the nose, which was planked in the converntional manner. Sure saved alot of time, as well as providing a smooth easy to sand surface.

Michael, I used two types of glue: Alaphatic resin (carpenters glue, like Tightbond) and CA. I used CA to help hold wood in place while the carpenter's glue hardened.
