Mike,

I had an HS5945 fail on me this morning. (Lost the plane and damaged the motor) The servo was installed on the rudder (Sig Cap) and it fully deflects back and forth in a random pattern. Doesn't matter if the transmitter is on or off. (When Tx is off, all other servos are locked in fail-safe as they should be) When I got home, I connected it to an identical brand new receiver and it does the same thing.

My questions are:

Do I need to send in anything other than the bad servo? I believe I ruled out transmitter and receiver problems.

Can I request that Hitec just replace the servo rather than repair it? I really don't want to install that one in another plane. If Hitec won't replace it, I'd rather save the shipping costs and just throw it away because I'll never fly that one again.

I am curious on this failure. I assume that it was fully deflected and that you could not land due to rudder yaw. Is this true? What caused the crash? Were you doing 3D maneuvers when this happened?

I was just warming up by flying around the pattern and doing some mild manuevers. I did a pass straight and level and noticed the tail was intermittently "wagging" back and forth. I immediately got into the pattern to land and that's when all hell broke loose. The rudder was fully deflecting back and forth. The rudder on the Sig Cap has a ton of authority, add to that a high power digital servo taking it to extreme travel and the plane was just uncontrollable. It was snapping severely. I got it back for a split second, but then it snapped again. The last one was close to the ground and it just went right in. I turned off my transmitter and walked over to the plane and the rudder was still going back and forth to the extreme. All other servos were locked in fail-safe (Tx was off). The plane didn't really hit all that hard so it didn't completely disintegrate. All of the radio gear was still connected and working properly (except for the rudder servo).

Sorry to hear about your loss.
I never thought about the rudder causing a crash.
I take it that your Sukhoi didn't have the wing problem.

I love how they look and want one but I have heard a lot od negative press about them. It is good to hear that someone like the plane!

The Sukhoi has been great! No problems at all. I heard they're going to have a different manufacturer build them now. It'll be interesting to hear if there will be any difference.
