I want to get started in Helis and want to know which is the best radio under $300. I am strongly considering the Hitec Eclipse 7 PCM, if only out of pure gut feeling. I don't know the difference PCM adds, but there seems to be one reflected in price. Is there a different radio I should be considering in this price range?

Also I am sure to acquire Aerofly Pro as that seems to be the simulator of choice...

Considering a scale Century Airwolf... any other recommendations... I know scale tends to be more difficult to fly, but I think this is where I want to be in the end and don't wnat to have a ton invested in stuff I will outgrow.

Anything else I need to be thinking about???

Thanks
Haywood

I don't personally own an Eclipse but I know several people who do and they love them. It has a lot of desirable features that similarly priced radios don't. Five point pitch curves for one. The JR 652 I know doesn't, it uses 3 point curves.

As far as PCM, I know a lot of people who will tell you it's not necessary. PCM will eliminate a lot of the glitches you can get but sometimes that's a bad thing. I read something recently about a guy noticing some glitches with his non-PCM radio which turned to be something wrong that if left uncorrected would have meant the loss of his heli.

With most raidios (Eclipse incl.) yu can select either PPM (normal FM mode) or PCM, it just requires you to buy a PCM receiver. So you could go to PCM later if you wanted to.

Hope this helps.

Mike

One feature that is the most important in a heli radio is a 5 point throttle and pitch curve. I think the Eclipse has 5 point.
I would suggest that you not learn on a scale heli, they are harder to fly because they are heavier and more expensive to repair. Look at century web site, they list what mechanics fit into scale kits and what mods need to be done to make them fit. Buy a heli that you can easily put into a scale heli after you learn to fly it. I think the Hawk fits very nice into the Airwolf.

I've just bought a JR 6102, this is a new radio from JR. This is my first JR radio and I think this is one of the best deal under 300, the price is 289 and it is a PCM radio with 5 point curves, it has a complete set of functions for CCPM and heli function and digital trims, this was my choose after made a short investigation in the net.

I haven't seen a 6102, but I own a 8103 and love it. If you can get the 6102 for $289, that would be a great buy ! The 8103 just allows for more expansion down the road. You can get one of the 8103's for around $400.

Good luck and do plenty of research !

Hey elabruna2, what receiver came with the 6102? That is a good deal if it is a PCM receiver !

Well I am no expert but I too am looking at Radios and at the moment from what I can tell the JR 6102 is the best buy for under $300. You get the Radio with a SPCM R770 reciever and 5 jr537's for $289 .............$269 for FM Reciever but I think we all would agree the PCM would be worth the extra 20 bucks.

The RD8000 is going for $299.99. It comes with 5 94322 ball bearing servos and a 1000 mah Rx battery. It has all of the bells and whistles. Plus you can use any Rx out there because it can shift so it will work with Futaba, Hitec, JR and........

Dru.

I hear from another forum that 6 channels will barely get me by on the Heli radio and that the initial investment in a good radio is one of the best decisions that can be made with a beginner. SO I am now looking for at least an 8 channel, PCM, 5 point radio. Where are the best deals on radios in this range?? Thanks!

JR8103 or Futaba 9C

Go ahead and get the packages with the PCM receiver and GY401 gyro and 9253 combo. That will take care of all your electronic needs.

Eclipse, 9C, and 8103 are the norms for under $300. The 9C and 8103 however will be without servos for under $300. Just looked at the 6102 and it looks very nice. As long as you don't go scale down the road it should be fine. Ahh, and as long as you don't need a governor either, but that's a pretty nice feature set for $279! I'd say that, the Eclipse, or plunk down a little bit more for the 9C (or 8103 if you're a JR fan).

Good luck!
