I just got my USS Dallas today. I also have the Hobbico Sea Scout. It's great! Very fast! Anyway, I was wondering... did anyone ever figure out a fix for the USS Dallas' pulse reverse problem? It's pretty annoying. Also, does anyone use their RC subs in Saltwater? I have very large saltwater tanks (360 gallons and 110 gallons). I have no problem getting the signal to the subs, but I'm worried about corrosion. I tried my sea scout in the saltwater a couple times, but I'm just wondering if anyone else uses theirs in saltwater and how their subs have done as far as corrosion. Thanks

Checkout post#73 to #78 on page 3 of this thread to solve this pulse problem. This is a fresh water dynamic diving sub. Salt water may corrode the exposed metal screws & propeller shafts.
The seascout sub is an interesting mini version if this wally sub. I'm just waiting for the price to drop further before I get myself one of these.
Have fun working on the mods!

Thanks for the info. However, I didn't read anything in those posts that talked about solving the pulse problem. Does the battery mod listed in #73-#78 solve the pulse mod as a secondary effect? Also, as far as the corrosion goes I was thinking about putting a little grease on the metal parts. What do you think?

The pulse problem in the propulsion is caused by the voltage drop in the batteries used for both the transmitter & receiver (submarine).
If you are using the stock 4 X AA batteries avoid using alkaline batteries. Try using the new 2500 mAH Nimh AA batteries also available from Wal-Mart.
These batteries minimize the pulse effect when you operate more than three motors on the wally sub at the same time (dive, turn & forward or reverse). The solution here is to increase the input voltage to the submarine & transmitter as I suggested in posts # 73,74 & 78.
The 7.2 volt system offers a notable increase in the sub's performance. The 12volt system for the transmitter offers a slightly longer range & longer operating time.

You can try applying pertoleum jelly on the scews, propeller shaft as effective anti-rust but I'm not sure how your salt water fishes in your tank will react. You can probably just rinse the wally sub in fresh tap water & wipe it dry after using it.
Enjoy your new submarine toy, it's a real bargain in cost compared to your sea scout sub.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably do the voltage mod. The USS Dallas is cheaper than my Sea Scout, but my Sea Scout can run circles around the USS Dallas. However, the USS Dallas can handle the water current better and has options for mods. I am hoping that I can add my mini wireless camera to the USS Dallas. We'll see how it goes. Again, thanks for the info!

No problem. Tell us how the mini-cam mod goes on the USS Dallas sub.
I have'nt tried that.
I've got 2 Nikko Explorer subs here from the 80's still waiting for mods I have planned for them. I think the mini-cam will fit nicely into the Nikko sub. It's 10 times larger than the wally sub & has a clear plastic canopy in the bow. Perfect for mounting that mini-cam.

Guys,

First of all, I would like to thank you for all your info via these threads, this is very helpfull to make my choise of purchase the "wally" sub. I am new in this sub arena... I got the sub yesterday and already mod the shaft with a car axle and water-proof bearing to handle the vibiration. The bearing fit the hole bow cowling perfectly and can be easily secured via a tiny screw (ie: sunglasses frame). Bare in mind that I opted to mount TRAXXAS prop #1584 which has a sharper pitch and should produce more speed. The bearing helps for the design. Now I need to to work on the power. I reviewed the various threads but I plan on using a 9v battery with a tiny potentiometer to regulate the voltage and not frying the motors. My question:Before I start wiring... I will I have enough mA to run the sub?
The next step would be to increate the range via a new antenna. I think, I will be using the internal solution. Any recommendation on the wire?
Also due to the added weight on the bow, it looks like I need to add S-foam to increase floatation - Do we have anything else out there to do the job?

Thanks - awesome forum -

Hello Agosta_fr,

Welcome to the world of submarines. The wally sub may be small, but it's cheap enough to get you started in the facinating world of submarines if you just want to try it out.

The 9 Volt battery that you plan to install as an alernative to the stock 4.8volts (4 X 1.2 volt) may not work. The mAHh output on those square 9Volt batts are 150-180 ma Max. The 7,2 volt (6 X 1.2 Volts) that I recommended has been tested as a reliable alternate upgrade.
The runtime however depends on the mAH rating of those AAA batterries that you plan to use. The higher the mAH rating the longer the runtime on the wally sub. typical output for these AAA are 750-800 maH.

The later posts suggesting the use of longer internal antenna (on the submarine) wire to extend the operational range of the sub is a correct modification. Use the #22 or #24 silicone, rubber or nylon coated copper wire avalable fom radioshack stores.

You have to use extra bits of styrofoam material & try cramming them into those small spaces inside the sub to correctly trim it.

GulfstreamI,

Thanks for the reply - I will do your way regarding the batteries so I don't waste my time prototyping. I found neoprene to have better buoyancy properties so you need less material. I even had to add more weights to trim the stern. I used only one dia section x .25 thick. I got it from cup holder. I gave the boat a test drive in the pool and I am pleased with that prop. I don't have the #1534 to compare too but seem to be fast. Perhaps too much torque because the boat is heeling on the surface but fine at depth. I inverted the stern so the boat sinks even going forward.

ok - let me know if I need to think about different mods.

later

Anytime for a wally sub captain! Check out the mods to correct the trim on the sub.
The larger Traxxas prop has the undesired effect of makng the sub veer to the right.
The battery mods plus the larger prop will result in double the stock speed for this small sub.

I've tried testing the modified Wally sub VS. the Nikko Explorer sub in surface speed and found the Wally sub to be marginally faster than the huge Nikko sub.

Try the other mods for the rudder control. I have'nt tried installing that particular mod , but I think it's a correct & tested mod by it's contributor.
I've been busy with my r/c powerboats all summer. Now it's back to my subs for my winter projects.

Have fun with your moded Wally sub, I did!

The Sea Scout has a positive buoyancy. So yes, if you take it to the bottom it will slowly rise to the surface. I added a very small weight to mine to make it have equal buoyancy. This way it stays at the depth I take it to. However, this sub doesn't need to move forward to dive. It can dive and surface while standing still.

Does anyone else own the Sea Scout? If so, do you know how to replace the nose cap? It comes with an extra nose cap but doesn't tell you how to replace it. Also, does anyone know what the screw on the bottom does? It appears to do nothing. I'm wondering if it's for ballast (to add water to the sub). Of couse I'm not willing to test that theory out on a $50 sub unless I have more info!

Could the screw be the trim tab for the rudder to make the sub go straight? It's possible that it might be ballast, check out the review on this site.

Hello Agosta_fr,

Do you have a cmaera you can shoot the bearing and placement you are talking about? Who's bearing is it, where exactly did you put it and also if you could shoot the prop too - I'd like to see the diffrence between that one and gulfsteams.

Ferdinand
good to hear your still checking this thread - I haven't been here in awhile - I hope your are doing well.

mocars2,

My boat is in pieces at the moment, but I will be happy to take a shot this weekend. The bearing + axle comes from a RC car that I got to a local hobby shop. it fits the stern hole perfectly and avoid balance/torque issues on the axle. I am in the process of sealing all the electronics and extending the antenna.

Hello all! Just got my Wal-Mart sub yesterday. The Wal-Mart is two miles from my house and has at least 5 more in stock! It is a cool little toy. Used silicone to seal it up, re-route the antenna and used a new one from RS for the Xmitter. Here is a good mod; I used the 7.2v 600 mah battery off of my Parkzone Slo-V (smaller than the factory pack, had to add weight), switched to JST/BEC connectors and I can still use my original AA pack that it came with if I want to!!! Haven't done the prop mod yet, how do you get the old prop off without harming it???

I will have pics if someone can tell me how to post them.
If anyone needs a sub, I will sell it on Ebay or send me a cashiers or money order and I will ship.

hey Junior!
welcome to the Wally sub club. I would imagine alot of folks are on vacation right now, so perhaps thats why they haven't responded yet. I myself haven't checked/posted here in quite sometime. Have you beena ble to remove that prop yet? I believe in some of the earlier posts they said to use needle nose pliers to pull it off. I think it pulls straight off. haven't tried yet, i got distracted with other projects. Not sure if you were going to use rechargables or not, if you do, keep in mind they are HEAVIER than alkalines and you will have to trim accordingly. good luck!

Shane

Cryosis,

cool! if you do the mods Gulfstream1 has outlined starting on page 2, (he also has it in Word format to printout, I'm sure he'll email it to ya if you ask) then you should get some great enjoyment out of this "toy". Read through these pages and you will find numerous mods to do to your new sub. I personally haven't done all of Gulfstream's mods yet, but I can attest to modding your transmitter. I get decent range with mine modded. I actually used an antenna from a RC Car controller...3ft extendable antenna. definately improves range. I also use rechargables...don't forget to account for extra weight with those!!! Good luck!

have fun!

Anyone in Canada willing to buy the Mako Submarine from Radio Shack and ship it to Minnesota? I tried ordering it online from Radio Shack Canada but it won't let me order from the US.

Greetings SubMariners !
I'll be out looking for a Wally sub soon now that I'v read this thread.
I do have 2 subs, but they are the really expensive Full RC kind and progress is slow due to costs.
I am rebuilding my brothers old Gato Sub, It's one of the very first 1/72 RC Gato's. Very Scale.
The other is an Alpha Soviet fast attack sub, wet hull with WTC. new - never started.
Anyway, I look forward to diving in the summer. Right now the water here is SOLID. (NH, USA)
Keep up the progress reports, I'll be doing mods soon from them.

Hi rc submariners!!
I received a Motorworks sub yesterday and notice that it has some problems described in this thread.
1) Pulsing during reverse
2) If I press forward and then left or right it doesn't turn at all!! Seems like back and forward and right and left are not independent??
I mean: if I can' make it turn while advancing. Is this a common issue with the new batch?

Adding the additional batteries suggested would fix this??

Thanks
