I don't think it's such a good idea to put in a larger motor. The submarine's total length is only 13.5 ".
Installing a larger motor (though possible) will lead to balancing problems.
The mod that I did using the TRAXXAS prop increased the overall speed of the sub, this mod alone made the sub rear end heavy!
The total cost of the mods to my Wal-Mart sub (new transmitter antenna & TRAXXAS prop) is only 10 bucks.
The new receiver antenna on my Wal-Mart sub does stick out of the water, but the rest of the sub is 6" under water.

Can you give us detailed steps as to how you did that antenna extension? And where you got the extension?

Someone else posted instructions but your setup is completely different.

Yup, that was me![:)]
My set up is the same as the instructions that I posted. The "new receiver antenna" on this wal-mart sub was actually the "stock transmitter antenna" that came with the sub's control "joystick". You just have to bend the antenna wire to "angle it" just like what I did.[:D]

Hmm, I recall several postings up that someone added a FLEXIBLE extension to their exisiting wire. How would your extension compare to that one?

Theirs seems simpler to set up but I wonder which would offer a greater range improvement. Isn't an antenna an antenna?

i tryed the soft antenna and it only help before the dive ill dig through my old toys for a wire one now. hopw did you extend the shaft , metal tubve press fited on it or what

umm..... i wouldnt take the controller in but its full function up down right left forward reverse.
ive come to the conclusion my batts went dead and thats whats killing my range so time to buy new ones.

The flexible antenna keeps on getting tangled with my prop a lot of times when I put the sub in reverse.
I did some research at http://www.subcommittee.com , the antenna lenght does have an effect on an R/C sub's range. They also suggested that the lower frequency (27Mhz) has a much better chance of getting through several feet of water compared to higher frequency.

Remove the stock three blade prop by using a 6" long nose locking vise grip. Lock the vise grip gently on the prop shaft. Use a 6" long nose plier to slowly wiggle the the prop from it's base (if you plan to remove the old prop intact).
Cut a 4" X 1/8" dia. silicone fuel hose and insert it into the prop shaft.
Cut a 1/8" dia. X 2 " brass solid rod and insert this into the other end of the 1/8" silicone fuel hose.
The fuel hose here act as a cheap coupler for the prop shaft extension.
Connect the TRAXXAS prop AFTER installing the rear compartment section to the sub's body.
The prop is secured to the prop shaft by a small worm screw.

cool thanx now i have to get a new prop, also i routed my "soft antena" through the upper rear fin so its more scale(some have radio antenas that are strached from the tail)
you think the same could be done with the stock prop

You're welcome, anytime! The stock prop produces a so-so amount of thrust to push the sub thru the water that's why I opted for a large (out of scale) prop for this sub.

Thanks! [:D]
1) Just remove the four screws holding the back cover of the transmitter.
2)After removing the back cover be very careful with the green push buttons, they fall right off. As you can see this sub's transmitter is NOT WATERPROOF. [X(] It's just WATER RESISTANT.
3) Remove the old "wire antenna" by loosening the single screw that holds it.
4) The "flex antenna" or "rubber ducky antenna" as some call it, is from Radio shack. The N.P.A. (National Parts Authority) part # : A 90441 , part name: Transmitter Antenna
5) You have to "pull out " a least two coils & straighten it from the flex antenna bottom as it will not readily fit into the sub's transmitter housing.
6) Re-tighten the screw that will hold the new flex antenna in place.
7) Be careful when you put back the front cover of the transmitter, the push buttons for "surface" and "dive" has to be aligned properly or you may have a malfunction when you test the sub.
8) Use a rechargeable 9 Volt battery for this toy. I'm sure you'll drain an ordinary 9 Volt battery with this toy in no time at all.

[:D] lol [:)] It's OK. It 's the nacelle pods from those mini boats. I got it from the local Wal mart toy clearance section for only $4.00 plus tax.
If you want something different, you have to be creative.[;)]

Those micro motors are of the same type. These are used on the X-sub, Ocean Explorer 2 , Sea Explorer 2 , and those mini boats by NKOK. They can handle up to 4.8 Volts. That should be enough to push this 12" long GATO / BALAO class replica battery powered submarine. This old sub was my kid brother's pool/bathtub toy. I think it's time I give it a new look.

A few questions about your mod procedures:

1) How did you "connect" the internal flexible antenna and the external rigid antenna?

2) Is the external rigid antenna now susceptible to rusting from the chlorine in a pool?

3) Does the external rigid antenna create any drag IF USED WITH THE STOCK PROP?

4) The "additional sealant" you suggest... do you mean replace existing seals with something better or actually adding sealant? And what sort of sealant did you use?
