sub commander:

The best place to put styrofoam is where its needed to balance the sub to the depth and level indicated in the instructions.
The sub should sink to the conning tower fins and remain level from bow to stern with batteries and any "Modifications" you intend to run with.
Obviously, you will need to make minor trim adjustments depending on the water that you will be putting the sub into and changes in battery types. (i.e.:weight differences).
This can be a little tricky and very time consuming, if you do it correctly you will notice much improved performance over just, "getting it to work ."

GulfstreamI had previous postings with some details on how he balanced his subs with styrofoam.

Anyway, I hope these pictures will be of help to you . . . .

gulfstreamI:

I just purchased Four (4) OMG!) of the new version Walmart Submaines and you are right, there has been a definite attempt at improving the product, such as:

The stern tube cutouts.

The flaps-up design in the horizontal stern fins.

The larger surface area of the stern fins.

The antenna length on the transmitter.

The pulsed-on/off reverse in the transmitter control. - If you use an older version transmitter you can eliminate this "feature".

The power light stays lit on the transmitter until pressed again.

Have you noticed the off-delay built into all of these units? - if a transmitter pushbutton is held in for approx. 20-30 secs. the power goes off - but can be resumed by quickly releasing and pressing the button again! I'm not sure why maybe some kind of built-in failsafe?
I don't really like this feature but all of the Walmart Subs have it and I'm not sure if the transmitter or the receiver has this circuit in it.

Other trivia:

Did you know that these units are sold in lots of four(4) - two(2) USS CHICAGO and two(2) USS DALLAS with two(2) in 27Mhz and two(2) in 49Mhz and that the units are "sistered" one(1) 27Mhz/49Mhz USS CHICAGO and one(1) 27Mhz/49Mhz USS DALLAS with matching serial numbers? Kind of like collectibles - I included a pic - I could not find any serial numbers in the sub body or transmitter body, only on the battery covers of each of these units. If you intend or insist on owning a few of these, this may help by keeping battery packs with a particular sub. I put the serial number inside the sub body and transmitter body and on the battery holder with a permanent marker but, it might be better to use a good quality label maker instead.

Also, I spoke with a district manager at Walmart and he told me that these submarines are going to be more available and that in fact they are an everyday item!?!?

I can hardly wait to Mod one of the New Subs . . . .

sirnumskull,

You must be embarking on a "re-armament" program. lol You're collecting subs in "wolf pack" stlye numbers. You should try running them in pairs. (same fequency) I've done that before & it's interesting to control two subs diving or running on the surface using just one controller.
I have a suggestion: try using the "skull & crossbone" aka Jolly Roger (your avatar) on the "sail" of one of your subs. I think it looks cool.

you guys are dedicated. i'm impressed.

how do you control the thing when it's submerged in a pond, can you see it? Maybe you should add a real time video camera, and add a viewer on the tranny. then you can hunt fish for dinner.

i think i've seen some cheap remote video cameras lateley.

just a thought.

I have read the mods and I am have a couple of questions. Concerning the turning, has anyone tried adding a regular rudder in addition (or perhaps in replacement) to the turn motor? If its like most other toys it would be simple enough, using a magnet arrangement. Anyone tried adding a small light ot two to the sub? It seems it would be helpful in seeing where it is going.

Hello Kristopher,

The ideas here just keep on comming! To add a motorized rudder here in place of those thruster motors to turn the sub faster requires "reverse engineering". I would like to hear more on that magnet arrangement.
Hydro dynamics works similar to aero dynamics, that challenge of making that regular rudder work on this 13.5" toy sub is open to anyone.
About adding lights, I'm thinking of painting one of my Wal Mart subs yellow , & turn it into a sort of reseach sub. I'm planning to add those Tireflys on the sub's hull as mini searchlights. These are those flashing LED lights you mount on those on a car's tire valve, also available in Wal Mart.
When I'm done with this I can use this sub even at night, thanks to those LED lights.

Your right I'm in deep! Oh Well!
( Its All Your Fault - hehe! )

OK - Here's some Pics of my Mod Sub with my Avatar as you suggested - their waterproof too!

After trying all kinds of variations, I opted for just the single "Jolly Roger" head-of-sail figurehead . . .

This Wal Mart Sub is already being sold as far as New Zealand "down under". Same packaging , same everything. Check this out:http://www.trademe.co.nz, it's under toys & models under the category of "radio control>>>others". It's lowest bid is $80 NZ. Hmmmmm .... I wonder how much that is in $ USD?

Tungi,

I checked out ebay-Spain no luck over there. My Spanish is rusty, but I can understand what items match with the words. Try the sellers at ebay, there's a Motorworks Submarine seller over there that can send the sub over there to Europe.

Good luck to your quest!

You need to try a Super Walmart, they seem to be the only one's that carry the sub. I rcently bought 12 subs (yes 12) to sell on Ebay. I will post here when I make them available. Should be soon.

Hi gulf! - Hey I managed to find 2 49mhz Mako's at a Radio Shack here in Virginia. Paid $18.00 each for them. Not a bad little sub. Seems faster than the stock walmart boat. I was surprised to see that the battery compartment did not get flooded - it's not the best design the way you have to screw on the tail. At any rate, it's working so far. I did find that I could not use the 2300 batteries though. Could not get the sucker to balance. Did you find a workaround for this?

Skipper Pete,

If you are using those 2300 nAH Ni MH batteries for a long runtime, you must add extra foam floatation in between the sub's outer "skin" & inner hull to balance out the sub. That's what I did to get my Mako sub to work perfectly in deep water.
I'll post some pics here later.

The small Mako sub can easily out turn the Wal Mart sub in a one on one "battle". I even got that sub to do an underwater "barrel roll" (a 360 degree up-side-down turn) by a quick manupulation of the joystick controls I was experimenting with for the RS Mako mini-sub.

is it just me, or is the turning power very limited? i mean, i tried it in my bathtub, and it was able to dive, surface, go forward and backward with relative ease, but turning took forever. it only seemed to turn when the sub was completely stopped. if i tried turning when the sub was moving forward , it seemed like nothing happened. is it supposed to take like 6 feet before the sub even starts to look like it's gonna turn?

quick request: anybody here have some stern covers (aka: cowlings) from the first revision of the model subs and some stern RUDDERS (not dive planes) of the second revision they'd like to sell? i'm just looking for some tail parts and i'd hate to buy another sub just for that...

Skipper pete,

I checked ebay-Germany to see if the are any Motorworks subs sold over there. I didn't find any , but they did have a number of really cool r/c subs over there that are not available here in North America. I saw a number of versions of the "Los Angeles "class type of sub there.
You can check them out under: shiffen>> u-boot or unterseeboot.
