Nice Looking Sub!

Very neatly done prop extension mod!

Where do I get one of those rave rings?

Thanks for the info . . .

Man, I almost lost my old version USS Dallas the other day!

It had taken on water in the receiver WTC and most of the silicone interconnecting lines and the motor WTC's as well!

I had not taken the time to silicone(RTV) all of these important components against leakage and I had been doing a lot of mods

on the sub moving stuff around which is the quickest way to cause leakage at these places.

Luckily, it was only in about two(2) feet of clear river water when it decided to stay submerged and lost all comms but the LED

stayed lit and I was lucky enough to see it when all of this happened - it was a close call because there is a channel dropoff

just a couple of feet from the spot where it was sitting.

Now, I will dry everything out and do the silicone mod.

I definitely think that if you mess with the sub's insides in anyway - do the silicone job!

sirnumskull,

That is why I recommended the RTV silicone mods in those critical areas. You're lucky! You were able to recover your sub in shallow depth.
I've already lost 1 (old version ) sub. It sank in 10 feet of water in one of the local ponds.

This sub was my test bed for my early experiments & subjected to freezing waters during the last week of Feb this year. Unfortunately this sub's WTC's were not yet modded with the silicone sealant.
My haste to get sub into service cost me four new 2300 mAH NiMh batteries & the sub.

Again here's some pics of that sub on "eternal patrol".

I was just looking over the old information about these subs, Very cool if i had a lake or pool near my house i'd definelty get one. As for the steering mod though couldn't u just remove that whole motor assembly and prop and put an actuator to control a flap? It could even be hooked up to a pull pull setup like the propellor.
For the battery setup couldn't you wire up a + and - wire from them that stick out of the shell and then seal the whole battery box with the silicone sealant and charge the batteries through the connector?

My Condolences!

I would be quite upset if something happened to one of my modified subs after putting in so much time & energy.
Maybe someday you can build a recovery skid of some kind or even attempt a recovery dive if the pond is calm enough the sub shouldn't move around too much and still be in the same area.

After this all of my new subs are getting your recommended silicone(RTV) treatment!

night moves in my pool in louisiana. 6ft in pool. Silicone on all wtc in this baby. notice the flashing led at the top. Working on mod for torpedos. thinking of using cheap 27mhz set up on a boat rc system. would launche from bottom of sub and use different frequency 27. I also have a 1.2mghz wireless video camera that I might install also. Might have to get a bigger sub for all these things.

red91sit,

So far, sirnumskull's mod for steering this slow turning sub is the "least complicated" & easy to understand. Only minor alterations to an existing design.
As for sealing the batteries in the sub's hull & using a connector to charge , well ... you've read those new r/c manufactures warnings: avoid charging the batteries inside the vehicle. The reason for this is due to the possibility of an explosion of the batteries inside the r/c vehicle.

how about removing the yaw motors altogether and replacing them with some selenoids? (sp?) or do selenoids not work the way i think they do...

I don't understand how solenoids could control direction solenoids are usually used to control hydraulic systems fluid movement. An actuator i think would be the way to go because it uses the exact same wiring as a motor which it would replace (or work with if u wired it in series or parralel if it has enough power to not burn up the circuit board.

BTW magnum Gumball if you email me that video to "red91sit (a) hotmail.com" i will put it on imagestation for ya so everyone can see it. Or if you can figure it out it has to end with .wmv if it's a windows media video

red91sit:

I think the use of the term "solenoid" is only refering to the way the device operates.
A solenoid uses an electromagnetic coil to move ferrous material, usually in a linear direction(in-out/up-down) while a motor causes rotational movement. A large solenoid could easliy control position. The problem is that low voltage small solenoid type devices usually produce very little torque (power) due to their design while low voltage small motors can produce a lot of torque do to their design but they both use the same principle of magnetism and can do similar work depending on the size, weight and power necessary, and also depending on how they are coupled to extract the required motion.

Still not working, it looks like your pasting links from inside of your yahoo mail box. Try logging out, finding the video and linking to it then.

OK guys, since we've already past the point of no return in modding this sub, lets get down to the torpedos!
I'm thinking.....
Bottle Rockets work underwater
Hmmmmmmmm
Me thinks to drill a hole in the sub a tad wider than the rocket, attach some sort of magnet to the rocket so that if it strikes another sub, it will stick, and place saran wrap or something over the drilled hole so that the sub wont take on water before the rocket is fired. This mod has plenty of flaws such as...Lighting bottle rockets in a miniature submarine, the hole that is left over after launching the torpedo, and whether or not the magnet head will work properly. Needless to say, these will be early WWII torpedos (non seeking). Plus, you'll have to have all kinds of servos and extra channels n stuff. Is reverse used all that much? Perhaps you could make reverse do the trick. Maybe after I acquire one of these bad boys i'll put my ideas to use. I'm not new to watercraft modification, I've actually built an R/C boat out of scratch. It is extremely well designed (albeit ugly) and even leans into it's turns. Wish I had been the first one on the modding scene but alas, the respect gained from being in that position is going to take some time.
