I haven't decided how much riveting I'm going to do. At 1/7th scale, it gets pretty small. On the photo's that I'm using for reference, a lot of the rivets are very subtle or not visible, with the exception of some of the riveting on the fuse. I'll do those, but I'm currently not planning on going beyond those that are clearly visible in the photos I have. Rob your wing is coming out good. What is the material that you are using for covers and raised panels. I am using aluminum tape.
JoLLy, I love your Mick Reeves. That wing is fantastic. Makes me want to jump into a 1/5 scale project! I have some other smaller scale projects to do first.

How did you deal with this with regards to panel lines on the lower wing surface?

scott, i didn't add any scale details to the wing bottom except for the scratched carb intake and the kit supplied wing radiators. with weight as a concern, i didn't want to add anything that wouldn't be seen so that included the wing and fuselage bottom and the bottom of the horizontal stab/elevator.

I have to agree with Tubig on this one. Scale detail equals LB's, and we all know the smaller the model the greater the impact.

Saramos, I used aluminium tape as most others do. The secret is to ensure it is well and truly stuck down. I always rub the tape down by rubbing over it with the back of a small spoon. This does mark the tape slightly but is lost in the painting process.

Tubig - how are the plans for the maiden.

Hey, guess who just got their TOP FLITE SPITEFIRE kit in the mail today.. well, yep, you guessed it.

Anway. I was wondering when you guys are fiberglassing, do you cover the controll surfaces with fiberglass also. What about the elevator, I know it's not fully sheeted.

And if you do, do you just fully sheet everything!?

I'm going to get started on mine after I finish my Herr Pitts, and clean up, because I hate clutter. Nothing is worse than losing a peice of balsa, or a fiberglass cowl for a Great Lakes Biplane (if you find it, please send it to me!!!!).

Thanks!

if the control surfaces are open bay then you'll need to use a shrink-type covering, fiberglass won't work. in the case of the TF spit that would include rudder and elevator and ailerons (if you build per the instructions). i made my ailerons solid to represent metal covered surfaces per the prototype.

What did you have to do to fully sheet them?

Thanks.

Hey, I just went to the hobby store. I couldn't pass up this deal.

I got a killer deal on a Super Tigre G2300 motor. Do you guys think this is too big, and too powerfull, I know I won't be going wide open much. I just figured instead of adding a bunch of unused lead in the front, this may help some.

I have been reading thru this build and it has really helped me. I'm amazed at the workmanship and the great advise found here. I justed my TF spit build and just completed the Stab.. It can use some more sanding but i thought i would wait till its ready for assembly. attached are soem pictures.

Can someone answer a question for me?

Are the blocks that were glued in the back of the cockpit supposed to be sanded flush with the bulkheads?
I'm worried that when the stringers are glued in under the turtle deck that it will not be flush when it needs to be sheeted.
Can anyone explain to me what the purpose of these blocks are?

If I uderstand your question, you are refering to the two blocks on either side of the cockpit. I think their primary purpose is to give support to the curved sheeting in the rear cockpit area to compensate for the fact that the mid cockpit bulkhead doesn't come all the way up to the top of the sheeting to provide the needed support.

well, the wx gods in taiwan still have not smiled down on my spit for its maiden so i thought i would do a little more work. i made a battery box and moved the battery to a position just in front of the firewall and behind the engine. the battery is a 1700mah Nicad that weighs 5oz. the whole setup (box and battery) comes in at a little over 6oz. by putting the battery here i only need to add 10oz. of lead (vs. 16 earlier). also, i used a slightly more accurate fish scale for weighing and now she comes in at 9.75lbs. so i've managed to get her under 10lbs. but she's still 1lb heavier than the 7.5-8.5lb range noted by TF. the wing loading comes in at 34oz/sqft.
