I often fly after work so I bring my plane and gear in the car. When the sun is out (not that often here in OR) the car gets really hot, I usualy crack the windows to protect the covering from melting but my more recent concern is my flight packs.

I know that heat is bad for NiCd's but never really thought about the 8 or so hours in the car before flying until the other day when I left my plane on the 'I' charger of my alpha 4 during the day. When I showed up at the field, I was surprised to find that my pack was below voltage for safe flight. I peak charged and got good voltage and flew without problem for the remainder of the evening. The pack is about 1 year old and still tests out at or above it's rated capacity.

Could the heat during the work day cause the pack not to accept the charge? Or, is something else going on here?

How low was the voltage. Realize Ni-Cds (and Ni-MH) have a negative temperature coefficient so that hot battery will read a lower voltage and still be at full capacity.

When you get a chance let the battery set under similar circumstances and then discharge it (C function on your Alpha 4) and see what the actual capacity is. This should give you a warm (no pun intended) as to how much your pack has degraded capaciy wise setting all day in the car.

Red,

Thanks for the reply, it was just under the go voltage I think around 4.76 or something like that. I did not realize the heat would actually give me an errant lower voltage.

I'll try and run the test you suggest. I'm flying tomorrow but I don't think it will be very warm out so I may not have same conditions.
