I created a "Y" adapter from Dean's Ultra plugs to connect my 10-cell pack and 8-cell pack together. This makes it easy to upgrade to a single Lithium pack at a later date.

My two packs were taped together using duct tape. The packs fit perfectly in a position under the receiver tray so that only a few pieces of foam were needed to hold them in place. I wrapped foam on the forward side of the plywood former so that a hole was left in the middle for the two packs.

Although the packs were held well by the foam wedged into the sides, I also wrapped the connector wire from one pack around the plywood reciever tray for additional security. The Dean's connector was then held with a tywrap.

The position shown for the 18-cells of CP2400SCR put the CG properly at 5" behind the leading edge at the fuselage.

hello greg and all,
i talked with a man named Ales pelikan today from model motors, he gave some info for my 2 set-ups I.E. my corsair and AT-6. he said with my corsair and 4120 to run my 12 3000 nimhs with a 14X8 or 14X10 prop and with 14 GP 3300`s to use the 13X6or 8. same performance just a bit longer run time.performance is light aroebatics.

for the AT-6 he said with my 2820/12 12 3000 nimhs and a 12X8 prop would give this plane aroebatic capabilitys.

in both cases he said to expect 7 to 10 minute flights. if anyone has any questions or wants to know specs of these 2 planes PM me or e-mail me.

Greeting, Greating Corsair Greg. I'm using the same motor Axi 41/30/16 in a GP Lancair . I'm getting a 41 AMP draw on a 6S4P TP 8000 ma LiPo with an APC 14-12 electric prop. The ESC I'm using is a CC 80 AMP. Plane flies very well and I need to reduce throttle to half more most of the flight to keep the speed down. It is a pleasure to fly. Good luck with yours.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the reports. The GP Lancair is a popular plane. It looks great and is a nice size too.

I've had some delay in testing the power system as I fight off the flu my wife brought back from her business trip to Florida. It's been too cold here for germs this Winter so I was good until this happened.

I finished my Corsair and it weights 152oz (9.5 lbs) RTF with 18-cells of CP2400SCR.

I hope to measure current and RPMs before the maiden voyage. Here are a few photos with the gear up and then down.

hello greg,
your plane looks great!!!
just a quick questions for you, your horizontal stab looks like it is at a slight angle in the 4th pic optical ilusion ?

any idea when you will fly it ? i am anxious to hear how these motors work since i cant fly mine untill spring. we have about 2 feet of snow on the ground and expecting 7 more inches tonight thru sat bummer !!

keep us up to date and again thanks for the wealth of info.

Greg,

Noticed in several of your photos that you painted the tips of your prop on the backside as well as the front; my research indicates that only front side was painted.

Pilots found that looking at/through a yellow ring was quite distracting and fatiguing.

jrb,

A good tip from a true scale enthusiast! Thanks.

I'll add that to my finishing list after the maiden voyage when I install the pilot. I have developed a superstition in which I leave scale planes unfinished until proven flight worthy. Perhaps it just makes me less nervous.

Regards.

Nice work Greg. Here is my Corsair using a bit different approach to the inner bits. I cut a removable hatch to unplug between flights. I am still waiting for my collet from Varioprop for my first launch. Good luck.

Well.. I flew mine 3 flights yesterday. It's fantastic.. you guys are going to love it. My power system was a bit different than yours though.

Hacker C50-10L with 6.7/1 gear drive.
Thunder Power 5s4p 8000mah Li-Po
Castle Creations Phoenix 80 controller.
APC 18x10e prop

All up weight is just about 8 pounds if my scale is accurate. On the 1st flight, it took off at 1/2 throttle after about a 20' ground roll. Speed is just right for a scale appearance and doesn't change really from 1/2 to full throttle but the vertical sure does. After landing on the 3rd flight I noticed one of the landing gear struts was loose. Should really remove and loc-tite these before you fly. My only complaint right now is I couldn't get the mock radial engine mounted in the cowl because of the Hacker mount. I'll keep fooling with it once I get my Funtana built.

Both my Funtana and F-4U will be at MWE this weekend.

After MWE I'm probably going to have to break down and build the 78" span P-51 for a Hacker C50-14XL.

mookie,

I see your hatch just behind the firewall. That's another good approach since you can keep your wing on and it didn't affect the structural integrity.

Doug,

Thanks for the flight report! I'm envious of both you having flown the Corsair and of your high-end power system design. A Lithium-powered Hacker motor is a sure winner.

Good luck at MWE!

Nice project Greg.

The UBEC isn't really "state of the art" anymore. The SBEC is. It's much smaller, and supposedly generates less radio interference. It is also supplied with a arming switch.

Hi Kat,

Thanks for the tip and for visiting us at RCU!

SBEC Data Sheet

Although the price is a bit steep, I like the smaller size and the fact that is has an On/Off switch. I have been adding my own for the last few conversions but I prefer a "plug-n-play" solution.

Mitch,

I'm going to measure the current and RPMs just before the maiden voyage on my Corsair since it is a two person task on this plane. I can already tell that the power is plenty to fly her so its just a numbers question now.

This weekend is the WRAM show down in NYC so perhaps next weekend i'll take get the green light.

The SBEC is actually cheaper than the high voltage UBEC, and has a higher maximun input voltage than the UBEC. And the SBEC comes with the switch included.

BTW: I like the SBEC's so well that I have three UBEC's for sale. Two NIB, and one only used for three flights. I won't be listing them on RCU, so don't go there......

greg,

i have another quick question for you about the ESC`s. i was doing some more testing and my throttle doesnt seem to start until i move the stick about 1/8 of an inch on the TX starting and stopping, is this normal ? it does it on both my motors with different ESC`s, is there any way to adjust this ? again thanks.

Kat,

On thing to keep in mind is that the UBEC has a higher current rating than the SBEC. This may be important in large e-conversions where servo current is a priority over BEC size. The UBEC can deliver 3amps continuous and a 5amp delivery for up to 5 minutes. The SBEC is only rated at 2.5amps continuous.

Everyone has their opinion about switches and many folks are very loyal to a certain type of switch. All you have to do is plug the UBEC into the input side of your favorite switch.

Mitch,

This is normal for sensorless ESCs. The only sensored ESC and motor (that I know of) on the market is MaxCim. Although this technique has been bashed as "outdated", it sure spoils the heck out of you. My Graupner ShowFlyer, Hangar 9 AT-6, and Graupner Extra 300S all have MaxCim sensored motors and ESCs. The throttle feel is unsurpassed. Unfortunitly, for smaller electric planes, the market turned to sensorless connections for simplicity.

We test flew the Corsair today and it was very successful.

The heavy cross winds prevented a second flight so I did not get a video yet. I did get 35mm photos of the maiden voyage and will post them in a few days.

The Corsair flew surprisingly light as it took off in only about 40 feet. It flew around at half throttle but we were hesitant to perform any aerobatics due to the winds.

The plane landed well in the heavy cross wind and was turned slightly into the wind as it landed on pavement. The retracts worked great!

I managed to forget my AF Super Whattmeter so I didn't get a current measurement yet. The power level looks good but I need to check if I am at the motor limit or have room to add a few cells.

More next week...

Nice job Greg. Sounds like it went great. I flew mine this weekend and also had success. Unfortunatley my prop pulled too many amps and my speed control cut the motor. So my first flight ended in a dead stick! I knew it was close and I think I didn't have enough air flow around the speed control. I will change the pitch and check it. Also my retract folded on landing. It turned out to be the screw under the wheel well cover. Otherwise it flew great. Tons of power. I did some loops and rolls and all was well. The Varioprop sounded cool too. There was another guy with a glow version trying to get his up for the first time. He never did; another triumph for electrics!

mookie,

I'm glad to hear that you came out of the maiden flight ok. I have found that when using Lithium cells, the voltage stays higher than it does with NiCd or NiMH cells effectively providing more power. On my planes that fly good with NiCds, when I switch to Lithium cells, they always seem to fly awesome!

We did a close inspection of the retracts on my H9 Corsair in the pre-flight check and needed to slightly adjust them for a solid lock when in the down position. This made them hang just a little beyond flush with the well when retracted but we had confidence that they would lock out properly.

When retracted, wiggle the wheel and look at the end slot for movement. If you see the bar move (not the gear mains) you'll need to pull the rod through the quick link more on the servo arm.

Let us know your final power system setup when you are happy with it.

Where did you put your controller? Is it a 77 3P Opto?. If its in the fuselage, hang it under the motor. Use some tiewraps to secure the ESC to the motor mount. That's what I do in my Kyosho Spitfire and the ESC is subject to direct outside air and stays cool enough. How many static amps did you test before flying? What pitch settings were you using on your first flight? Glad to read that everyone is starting to get these warbirds in the air. A friend of mine flys this model, glow, and he's having a terrible time with the retracts. They always seem to hang down a little when retracted.

Kevin, I was reading 70 amps static. I know this is too much and yes it's the 77 3P OPTO. I used a Varioprop 3 Blade 15X10. My speed control was in the fusalage. I can't strap it to the motor mount without it touching the motor. I am going to cut more air holes in the firewall and change the pitch to get about 55 to 60 amps. I need to check my P-51 because I never have any trouble and actually it is faster. As far as the retracts go I have fixed them. The stock ones work once you sort them out on Hangar 9 stuff. They are flimsy though.

My Corsair was ready to fly after fine tuning the retract linkage a bit. The controls checked out, the throw range was good, the power checked out, and the prop ring told us that it was go time!
