Sorry to hear about Jim. I didn't know him but I hopes he saves me a freq tag, it's gonna be crowded up there! I got a few friends there and I'm sure he is stringing them along with the Unobtanium story!!
Thanks, Jim was one of those unique individuals that quietly changed many peoples lives and never asked for a thing. He taught me to fly r/c in August of '80....a record month here when the temps were above 100 for 15 days in a row. He met me at the field EVERY afternoon for a couple of weeks until I could wobble my trainer up & down on my own and never fired his plane up until I'd had enough for the day. I do miss him!

(Sorry to hijack your thread Jeremy, I'll get back on track now! ) Come to think of it, I'll bet Jim changed your life in some unsung way as well, eh?

IF IT DOES TURN OUT THAT DICKEYBIRD IS FROM ANOTHER PLANET, THEN HE IS DISQUALIFIED FROM THE CONTEST! It's bad enough that we have to compete against EARTHLINGS like MATCHLESS,AJC,BIPE,etc! Has JAPANMAN chimed in with his entry yet? He's been awfully quiet....you can have your topic back now, MATCHLESS !!

...I am on my third epoxyresin, trying to find just the right one. (some have gotten brittle too soon over time, some did not sand well.... ) ....

I'm debating about doing some lost foam glassing on my project-so I'm curious-what type of glass and epoxy have you found to work the best? And what type of filler and primer have you been using? Thanks!

Derek

Guys, save yourself some trouble and buy a quart kit of West Systems epoxy. It is excellent, and sands sweet. I have used it on everything from a few cedar strip canoes, to uses in my woodshop (furniture) to glassing rotor blades, making cowls, etc. it is awesome! I buy the 105 resin, and the 205 and 206 hardeners (slow and fast) and the pre measured pumps make it a no brainer.

Matchless, here is a trick I use for my lost foam parts... I mix in a bit of West Systems low density fairling filler (not a lot, but just enough to add some opacity to the resin). It is pink, and you can better see how thick the resin is. It also makes the resin even easier to sand, and there isnt any issue with flowing into the cloth, as you dont need a lot. Try it, it really works well.

Thanks for the tip AJ. I am familiar with the West Systems stuff from working with boats (real ones). Good stuff, but too pricey for me ... Maybe when I break down and learn how to make true molds, I won't have an issue with the price of the West Products.

For the little parts I have been making as of late, I have been trying to use products that are inexpensive and I can pick up locally. The two most promising resins have been a 30 minute Pacer product I got at Home Depot (what I made last year's contest entry cowling from), and some Pacer Finishing resin (this years). The spot putty I am using is a laquer based automotive spot putty I got at Autozone for a buck or two. I have been painting them with Testor's plastic model spray paints, and clear coating them with Minwax Polyurethane gloss clear (both from Wally world).

Just got back from a huntin trip, so I won't be able to make a new plug until tomorrow. Hope to get it done early tomorrow mornin'

Here in Canada, a quart kit of the West is $60, thats with the pumps. A gallon kit (4 times as much) is $125. Them's Canadian prices too!

Even the quart kit is loads cheaper than buying small 250ml bottles of resin, if you work it out. And the stuff has a long shelf life, years and years.

I wont use anything else myself, its worth the $$ for the ease of use, good sanding and cure time is spot on every time!

No doubt AJ, the West system is the best I've tried.

Hey MatchlessAero,

Do you know where I can get plans for a SC (Super Chipmunk, not Seditious Canary) for a Cox Tee Dee .049? I have loved the SC for years and remember seeing plans for one in the AMA rag about 15 or more years ago designed for a .40 engine. A SC with Cox .049 would be great for me and my small car.

Anyone got a lead for me?

SeditiousCanary,

House of Balsa makes a 1/2A Chipmunk. You'd have to make the cowl differently than in the instructions. It has an option for the rudder of Art Scholl's Super Chipmunk marked on the plan.

You beat me to it Andrew.... that was what I was going to suggest.

The other option would be to scale up my SuperChippy plans to .049 size.....

Finally got to make a new plug and glass it last night. I sanded on it a bit this evening and its lookin' like a good one....

Thanks for the HOB website. Even though I work for an ISP and my webskills are high, I was unable to find their website.
Do you have plans in computer format for your .010? I can scale about anything up if you do. I'd prefer to scratch it even though a laser cut kit would be really nice.

Well, spurred on by some furious building activities over in the Coholic, Dickeybird, Etc camps, I felt some serious pressure to get back on this project again.

I am stalling somewhat on finishing the plane, because I want to make the project last rather than blast through it like I usually do (I want the enjoyment to last longer... )

So- I finally made a new vacuum forming box and tried it out last night. Huge quality diff from the old one I was using that was made from a cardboard box. The new one is much easier, and more precise. I wish I had taken more time in constructing it because it is a little sloppy looking, but it works so well, I guess I just don't care. I do need to find a better plastic for pulling canopies on this one (any suggestions are welcome...)

I also have a ready to paint cowling (actually two). The resin I used is great, and the layup I did is stiff in just the right places. The little .010 looks so cute sittin' in there

Last but not least, I got the wing halves joined, the front locator in place, and the hold-down block mounted in the fuse.

Weather is supposed to be horrible this weekend, so I hope to make some more good progress.

Can we see a picture of the airframe with someting for scale? I mean, I thought the little 020 stick I built was tiny...

.010 scale, that has to draw a crowd at the field....
