Well, other than a few graphics on the fuse, the little Chipmunk is done

This evening, I installed and set the throttle cable, plumbed the tank and fuel proofed what had not already been fuel proofed. I also cut the knob off the needle valve and silver-soldered on the cap of a socket head capscrew for easier needle adjustment.

All up weight ended up at 5.15oz's........... A little more than I had wanted, but not bad considering this little thing has a detailed instrument panel, and all 4 functions going.... Probably the lightest 4ch glow powered airplane I have ever seen. Balance point is maybe a little further aft than I had wanted it (I usually fly the littlest birds with the CG fairly far forward to start) but I think it will be fine as is.

Al, the canopy is made over a balsa buck and shrunk with a heat gun. The plastic is from a 2 litre soft drink bottle (Dr. Pepper in this case ) per DickeyBird's canopy method. Took me several tries to get one right, but I'm pretty happy with the results...

Ugly man, real ugly. Ha! LOL! Just kidding of course. Can't wait to see it at SMALL this year. And as for the 5.15oz weight, I couldn't blow a bubble that weighed that. You guys kill me.

Thanks 2fast!

Here's a pic with the graphics on it. Some of it is custom cut vinyl, some is handcut monokote.

I also did a run-up of the engine yesterday evening to make sure that the plumbing is correct and everything functions like it should - it all went great.

I have a battery on the way(hopefully here tomorrow) that should bump it below 5oz's. I would really prefer to fly it once that battery is in place...My intention is to test fly it Sunday Morning.

Hey rog, not a bad idea, I wonder if anyone has tried this. If you fill a bunch of empty space in, say a fuse with bladders and helium wouldn't it be the equivelant of shaving grams\ounces?

Well, despite impending thunderstorms, I met Dickeybird, Spindr and another buddy at the field this morning.

The little Chipmunk ended up at just over 5.1oz's, and I was able to set it up with a slightly forward CG like I prefer for first flights on itzybitzy ones.

On the first flight, I set the engine a few clicks too rich and the little bird flew sputtering along. Launch was uneventful with Dickeybird giving it the old 'skyhawk heave'. Climbout was good, and it took only a few clicks of rudder trim.

After getting her safely on the ground, my buddy Chris showed up and ran the camera for the second flight. I needled the airplane much better this time and the plane came up on the wing immmediately after launch. Climbout was really good this time, and I got an opportunity to find out what she would do aerobatic-wise. Roll rate is very good, and inverted flight is maintained with only a little back pressure (much less than I figured with the flat bottomed airfoil it has). Snap rolls are absolutely instantaneous- its really easy to have it do 2 snaps instead of 1 if you are not quick on the sticks. Loops are nice and round, but it does have enough elevator authority to stall the wing if you push it too hard. It will almost knife edge too. I won't win the TOC with it, but it really performs great in the aerobatic realm.

Finally, as the fuel tank was running somewhat low (I'm guessing) DB made the suggestion of trying a power-on-landing. I tried flying the plane at different throttle settings for a moment (throttles back and performs just like a big old .40 size). Then I set it up on landing and backed it down to idle. I put it down nice and clean on the runway to cap off a great day of flying!

I plan to install a slightly lighter battery that will move the CG back a hair and lower the weight by about a quarter of an ounce, but other than that I could not have asked for it have gone any better and I don't plan to change anything.

Thankyou DB, Spindr and Chris for helping me get her in the air today!

Jeremy,

That's great news! Congratulations! It's always nice to have things go fairly close to plan on a test flight. Now you must post a video clip!

Yup, what Jeremy said except he left out the part about his hands shaking like a leaf and him giggling like a schoolgirl!!

All in all, a VERY impressive little critter....4 channels on an .010 powered airplane. Absolutely incredible!

And then there was the part about me listening to the weatherman last night and leaving the BareCat at home! Decent flying weather, good video man was there and me just dying to get some BareCat video for the contest site. DOH!

Jeremy and Dickeybird, how was the wind? its dead calm now. You must have been out early, because it was kinda windy most of the day. Its just right to try my P-51, but I didn't have my battery pack charged and just did a test glide. It do glide!

Congratulations on the maiden, Jeremy!
