Hi, Can anyone help me on plans for a homemade rc powered paraglider, i have 4 standard servos, one can 540 motor, plus prop, 2000 MAH 7.2v rc car battery pack, standard reciever, and a standard speed controller lying around, that i would like to use for it, what homemade items would work, to create it. I know all i just mentioned isn't exactly light, but if i make a huge chute, the 540+ 7.2v Battery should be able to get into the air?

If no one can help me on this, I would like to make anything that will fly with this equipment, anything. Any help will be much appreciated. I don't have much to spend on expensive things.

THANKS

Pete

I get the impression you are not an "expert" RC flier already. If this is true, I would certainly recommend an airplane before trying something so challenging as a paraglider. Your standard size electronics are probably too heavy as you suspected. But don't give up, there are lots of options. Consider going to a swap meet where you can find used stuff. Or start out with a foam glider as I did.

There are several powered sailplanes that will work with the equipment you have. One is made by Goldberg, it's an electric version of the Gentle Lady. There are others. The kit is probably within your budget.

If you want to make a parachute, get some nylon ripstop. They use it on real parachutes.

Model Aviation published plans by Luther Hux for a paraglider a few years ago. It may have been mid-80's. Check the AMA archives, and I will keep an eye out for the article and will repost with the date of the mag if I find it. Luther did several neat items about then-a dirigable, a photo plane and others.

It sounds to me like you basically want something like a rogello wing ultra-light kind of thing. I don't know anything about them, but yoiu might try starting with a good kite and adding a chassis to it. When I say good kite, I mean the kind of thing made out of tyvek or ripstop as suggested by CombatAddict. These kites aren't cheap, but that part will already be done for you. Then you just have to figure out how to hook up your power to it.

You might also try posting in the unconventional aircraft forum. That's not the name of it, but I don't remember it off the top of my head. Just look through the forums and you'll see which one I'm talking about.

Good luck.

Is this same thread in two forums? I'm confused.

Hi Everyone

Thanks for your reply's!

Reading through all of this i find that CafeenMan confirmed what i thought, that is using a Kite as the wing or chute, I am busy building a chassis made out of
styrofoam, this design isn't a tech boffin's dream, it's plain and straight forward, and i am trying
to keep it well balanced with most of the weight (Battery) underneath the chassis and also as uncomplicated as possible, Thanks for the tip on the Luther Hux plans, i will also try to search for it, ideas can broaden my options.

Yes i am not an expert R/C Flier, I do have a 2m electric Glider, and after i've seen how much lift i can get out of a speed 600 can motor, and 2000 mah battery, i'm quite confident that it should power a paraglider, yes maybe too confident, but confident enough to go through with it. ) That is why i will need a reasonable size wing or chute to get the lift for it. I do believe that eventually i will get it up in the air, when is the quetsion. It should also be quite stable because of the weight.

The reason i want this is, i want to build something i can take and fly anywhere, I need to drive
40km to the nearest club here, and they are only "legally" open from 14:00 to 18:00 on a Saturday only, And because i'm only starting out, i would obviously like to fly longer than all of the Saturday afternoon Veterans at my club, feeling that 4 hours a weekend is enough. Not for me, i need more stick time per weekend. I can fly my Glider at the Local Sports field, it is big enough, but what if a respectible r/c pilot switches their radio equipment on in the populated surrounding area, or what if someone is flying a helicopter in their backyard.
I'll be flying but not enjoying it, having all this in the back of my head.

I really enjoy flying my glider, nothing beats a real plane!

Now i know some of you would say get a parkflyer, mostly everything electric and especially
hobby products is imported here, and not on a mass scale, making it expensive. Even parkflyers.

Otherwise i would've liked to get a parkflyer.
The items i have is lying around catching dust, again they are heavy yes, but they should be put to work, and if i'm not going to try i'll never know. I have a local Kite shop near me,
Buying a expensive Kite will still be less expensive by half or more than a parkflyer here.
I'll feel better losing a Paraglider than losing my 2m Glider, because of interference at the local sports field.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, i live in a 3rd world country, and our communications here is not as robust as in the states or anywhere else.

CafeenMan, sorry, it is the same thread in 2 forums, i was not exactly sure where to put it.

Thanks

Pete

Take a peek at Tower hobbies' site. they sell a slightly smaller Rogallo wing model in ARF form. 3 channel if I remember.

I was going to try the same thing with a 2-line stunt kite i found at a garage sale... tuened out the Kite's design was not compatable with the project.... choose a FLAT kite like the old Bat kites of the mid 1970's. To lift he weight of the electric power system you have... plan on 60 inch span.

You can also look up the RCM magazine plans for the flying witch. its a Rogallo wing R/C model A bit larger, but it shoud give some god ideas.

Thanks for your input FH, and also for giving me an idea of the size of the wing,
I checked out some prices at my local Kite shop, and they are within affordable
reach, i have to pause this project for some time, but i do not mind getting any tips, suggestions, and ideas in the meantime, at present i'm focusing on the
frame, and how to get the motor fixed to it, Zip Ties is all i can come up with in
my head to attach almost everything to the frame, I'm using a "L" shaped piece
of styrofoam, putting all of the electronics(reciever, 1 servo, Speed control
on the long part of the "L" (horizontal part) and the motor on top of the short part of the "L" (vertical part). Just to make it clear the "L" is turned so that the long part is horizontal and the short part os vertical. After figuring out how to attach all this, i then need to figure out a way of adding some wheels,
2 at back, one at front, (The battery is situated underneath the whole frame, again Zip Tie comes to mind for the battery.)

Then the turning system. i'll use a long control horn and attach some servo linkages and figure out a way of keeping it stable for turning the wing. (kind of like the SkySurfer system. Lastly ,making a body for this "skeleton frame" , I still have no ideas on this, if anyone think of anything to better all of this, keep
it simple, i do not have specialized equipment to make it a "priceless piece of art" although i wish i had.

....another thing: i'm concerned that the weight of the whole chassis with everything attached is going to be a big burden on the servo and control horn,
for the weight of the whole thing hangs on to it!, maybe i'm over concerned, maybe i should try to fix the strings onto the frame somewhere and attach the
linkages onto the strings, configuring it so that most of the weight is hanging onto the frame and not the servo.

Well anyway...

Thanks everyone

Pete
