Tailwheel assembly.

This was very simple, but important to mount correctly to avoid binding with the rudder. The technique I used (similar to that which Dave Guerin did on my last focus) after staring at it for a few days, and after finding a couple of steel wheel collars, included:

1. Slipping the wire through the tailwheel bracket and clipping the wire about flush with the top of the bracket.
2. Clipping the bushing part end off (just after the hole) and slipping it on the top of the tailwheel bracket
3. Putting in the wheel collar (I used a standard 3/32 wheel collar with a 4x40 socket head screw). File a flat notch where the screw meets the wire.
4. mount the wheel and put another 3/32 wheel collar to hold the wheel on. (File a flat where the wheel collar screw fits in there as well).
5. Align the tailwheel assembly so its straight front to back and the wire/wheel collar/bushing center are smack center of the rudder hinge line. Mark two holes and drill 1/16 holes, screw in with two of the supplied #4 screws.
6. align the tailwheel so its straight with the rudder, and then mark the hole of the bushing where it goes into the rudder. Move the tailwheel over, drill a 1/16 hole and then move the bushing tab over and screw in in the hole with another of the supplied #4 screws.
7. Take two steps back and wonder why it took three evenings to mount something so simple.

Hello Don,

I was wondering where precisely did you put the elevator servo? ( measurements )
And with this set-up, did you use the full length of the carbon-fiber pushrod?

Your info will be appreciated.

Danny

Cheers!

Danny,

After doing the steps in post #46. I think it was about an inch or so. I remember thinking that it would not be long enough to mount the servos in the front bay (canopy access) area, so that's why I put the servos from the under-side rear bay. Here were the steps I took: I had everything mounted (servos, pushrod, linkages in the back) and then screwed the clevis on the titanium pushrod end, centered the elevator and servo, and eye-balled the length by holding the Ti/clevis assembly next to the pushrod (marked it) then cut the CF with a dremel.

After putting some thick CA on the Ti end and inserting it into the CF pushrod end, I secured the pushrod to the servo.

Don,
I would reccomend using JB weld to hold in the pushrod end. Been doing this for several years with zero failures..

My Focus-2 is about a week of evenings away from being flyable. Need some parts at the WRAM show.

Will be gluing my belly pan into a groove cut into opening

Using OS 1.60RFX with pump...

Nite

Eric,
Is the pump the OS 140RX part or an aftermarket graft?

What does this mean Eric? Did you cut a groove around the entire belly opening to slot the pan into?

Almost Doug.

I cut a piece off the front as far back as the landing gear. Then I cut a groove about 1/8" down for the rest of the belly pan. I also recess the front section by peeling back the covering. Cutting away 1/16" deep to match the belly pan. The rear section will be glued in place.

I'll post some pic's when I get a chance.

Regards,

Eric.

Fresh back from the WRAM show.

Part one. The tool is made from a dremmel arbor with two cutting discs. One is a wood cutter and the other a metal cutter to get the right thickness of slot.

The tool runs in a ball bearing pressed into the tool support handle (a srap of ali angle bar). the other two bearings work like a router stand off.

part 2

The area to be cut was doubled up with some 3/8" balsa. the ard part was taht is is an ARF and care had to be taken with the covering.

However it looks tidy and you lose the lip/edge that catches when you clean the bottom.

Part 3 - Finally the front is recessed and cut to clear the UC bolts heads.

You could do this with the whole belly pan if you like. You can't groove it all however because it hits the UC plate if you lower it that far.

Hope teh pic's are better than a 1000 words?

Eric, I assume your doing all this just for looks? My belly pan has warped together so It is too narrow and when I stretch it open it puckers on the back end.

Not for looks. More for cleaning. Michelle had trouble with the old Focus belly pan. It kept snagging the cloth. The new installation is much cleaner!

The main idea is to glue the rear section in place. Gluing it on the surface was not an option that I liked due to above requirement.

All the belly pans appear to have a "memory". I softened mine with a heat gun. taking care not to bubble the paint. I then laid the belly-pan face down and used a long block of wood to press down and carefully flattened out the curvature.

Lee,
More bad news I'm afraid. We all flew today.

I originally went down to the field to run my OS 1.60 with an OS mix carb. Everything went so well that I refueled and "Florence" (I named my FOCUS-2 after my dearly departed mother), was placed on the runway.

She took off at 1/2 throttle and wanted to roll right a little. Beep beep! and we had some left trim in and then some down trim. The rest was really a bit of a none event. Seriously!

I flew some Master's schedule and some FAI 45 up snaps etc. Rolls were Temptation-esque. Had everything on low rates so snaps were a bit too gentle, but throttle back and it broke well. Knife edge was mix free. Even ventured into a 1/2 KE loop from level flight with no curling off in either direction.

Eightpoints and 4 of 8's were easy, at least they would have been if the pilot could count better and was not winter-rusty. Loops were equal either way and long down lines had a slight canopy pull. Will probably go away when I correct the right roll with some up LE on the right wing panel. Spin needed aileron on these low settings. (Will try higher rates next time out - I like to take a new plane back to the shop to look for things that might not be right. I already found a loose nylock nut on one of the wing adjusters, for example).

402 consecutive rolls only required a tap of down going through inverted. Outside loops were teh same as inside loops to perform.

Basically it flew for the first time with very few triming changes needed for next time.

I will predict that this plane will make quite a few people very happy in a very short time.

Except Lee, of course, because doesn't believe in Santa any more, so he got snowed upon...
and Szczur who is getting slow in hs old age.....

Evl-1. (VBG)
