Can anyone provide construction and operating info on what's termed a "battery zapper" for conditioning Nicads?
We have a good electronics surplus store in Orlando, and I'd like to put one together.
Or, lacking that, is there a website advertising these devices for sale?
Thanks!

There is no such thing as a zapper (or anything else) that "conditions" Ni-Cds. A zapper is simply a device to hit the Ni-Cd with a high current pulse sufficient to blow away a short that has developed and leaves hole in the separator where the short can reestablish any time from 10 seconds to 10 months. But if you want to play along with the concept all you need to do is to quickly brush the leads from your battery pack (flight pack) across the terminals of your filed box or starter battery - auto battery will work also. Just a quick pulse is all you need. For transmitter packs you will need a higher voltage source.

Red,

I'm not a battery zapper, but just curious. Are you saying that zapping is only a temporary fix for a problem that will quickly return at an unknown time? And when you "quickly brush" those wires to a car battery; is it plus to plus and neg to neg, or plus to neg and neg to plus? (That last one sounds like a real zapper for everyone involved!)

Thanks,
Joel

Look at it kind of like a defribulator for batteries. It doesn't repair anything, just gives you a chance to go a bit longer with the same latent problems waiting to kill you.

+ to + is better, just a bit more sanitary, but the other way will work. What you are looking for is a large slug of current to blow away the short that has established through the separator. If you have a variable power supply just hook it up and keep cranking up the voltage/current watching the voltage on the cell. When the short blows the cell voltage will jump quickly to over 1.2 volts where before it was very low. You can actually tell the resitance of the short if you monitor the votage and current [ R= V/I ] before the voltage jumped up.
