Hi Hawkman:
I had a 1/4 scale parafoil from Airfoil Aviation and flew it for about 4 years. It was a pain to fly untill I got the cg right and did not try to carry too much weigh. I was using a small stuffed Gorilla toy but the weight and drag was too much. Even without any load, it was hard to get airborne. It must be directly into a light or no wind condition with someone holding the chute in a somewhat flying position. Power must be applied only when the chute was perfectly level. If it dropped off one one side, the tekeoff must be aborted. After many tries, I finally mastered the takeoff. Once airborne, power must be adjusted to control altitude and stability of the "gondola". Mine was lost when I flew into the clouds on an overcast day. Nothing worked to get it out of the cloud--chopped power, put it in a full turn but it was never seen again. We searched the area a week later in a J-3 cub but it was never found. Had my name and address in it too but it was never reported as found. Think it must have drifted into the Ft Benning, Ga. Impact area---where it will have to stay. I have heard that many people could not get it airborne for some reason---probably CG was off. JIm

Ouch! Loosing your paraplane in the clouds was terrible. I am fortunate in that mine has had such problems flying I have had no risk of loosing it! My advice is avoid airfoil aviation. Most everyone I know has only had headaches from theirs...mine included.

Any idea on how much your 1/4 airfoil aviation weighed? I have built a new model of my own design, but it is coming in around 4 pounds. I have some pictures up at

And there are some other discussions I am following at
