Popular aircraft in Senior Pattern Assoc. are Daddy Rabbit (1967, I think), Dirty Birdy ('75 and still available from Joe Bridi), T2A, Compensator, New Orleanean, Patricia, a smattering of others before '75. Visit the SPA website for a whole list of pattern aircraft from the era you are interested in. The planes are divided into Antique class ('65 and older) and regular (over '65 but no younger than '75).

Hi,
There's the EYEBALL, any of the PHOENIX series, and the TROUBLEMAKER to name a few. If you want some really early designs there's the SMOG HOG, ASTRO HOG, ORION, and TAURUS.
Regards,
Jon

SPA airplanes are awesome, tough to beat a Dirty Birdy or T-2A. The Daddy Rabbit seems to be the popular choice at the contests shown on their website. Most all of their competitions seemed based in the deep south... depends on where you live & if you plan to do any kind of competitive flying or just have one of these planes just for the fun of it.

You might also consider slightly older machines that the VR/CS (Vintage Radio Control Society) allow, I believe the cut-off here is 1970 rather than '75 as the SPA allows. Here the Kwik-Fly or Sun-Fli would be great choices... as would dozens of other designs. If you are in the Northeast please consider joining us at the VR/CS reunion this year over Labor Day weekend. Site is Sayre, Pa. Email me if you would like more info.
Sun Fli is a very easy kit (just built one) and makes a nice entry into vintage pattern.

Love some of the oldies. Anyone have plans for the Top Flight Orion??? Also want to build an Astro Hog but with the "Barn Door" ailerons like the original had.

Ed Izzo's Sabre Hawk was a neat plane. Used to fly with him in Syracuse.

Thought the Dirty Birdy was earlier than 75, like maybe 73. However I think it was modified to have a pipe tunnel later, maybe 75? Also thought the SPA cutoff was 76?

Tom Brett as I recall. Used to be a designer for GM and DeBolt kitted his winning design. I remember seeing one in Endicott, NY at the Aeroguidance Society contest probably about 1964. I think Pete Reed was flying it.

I would be interested in a copy of the plans if available.

Hi

Try Tom Dixon's site-even though he is more into control line he has plans available for some of the best planes ever designed such as the Orion, Taurus, Beachcomber, Crusader, Tom Brett's Perigee, Sultan and other designs from the Vintage era.

Do a google search for Tom Dixon and check under the plans section

Hope this helps

have fun

Thanks for the info on Dixon. I'd been into his site but never tagged it to my favorites and then couldn't remember. He has some of the great old designs.

I think that Doug Spreng "Stormer" would be a pretty good "knock around" everyday plane that would be quick to build.

You have the best now. If you can find the Sportmaster, Trainermaster or Aeromaster as suggestions.

Tom Dixon's web site is: http://members.tripod.com/~TomDixon/tomdixon.htm

If you want plans for the Taurus, Tauri, Aeromaster, Sportmaster, or Trainermaster, write Ron Clem at pakrattt@aol.com or (858) 450-1968. Super nice fellow and good service.

Hi Guys,
I loved the old days of go fast pattern and I still fly my Compensator with an OPS 60 redhead when I get the chance. I just saw an Illusion show sale on the auction site. I never had one of these but I saw Dave Brown fly one at the NATS years ago. I was wondering what your thoughts were on this airplane.

The Illusion was never as good as a Tiporare or Curare. The mid wing reduced the knife edge capability and it had more cross-coupling then the Tipo's. Just my opinion!

Hi Jorge,
I can tell you without a doubt you will love the plane, I have a Illusion I built 3 years ago I am flying for sport and it is fantastic. As to what the previous post stated, I can not disagree more. I have flown this plane in strong cross winds and it does not budge. On the other hand, my Tipo 750 drifts quite a bit. Knife edge is also great, I have a YS 91 in mines and it knife ecges absolutely strai
