Looking at the market of r/c warbirds you can probably notice that russsian WWII fighters are greatly underrepresented (especially the smaller sizes). That is why I started to design my own .40 size Yak-3 last May. Besides designing Yak-3, my friend and I also built CNC machine to cut the parts.

The entire design was done in 3D CAD program, then transferred to G-code and cut using our CNC machine.
After long learning curve we managed to design and cut all the parts.
Here is the result:

So what is the plan for it? Are you going to sell kits or plans of it? What is the actual span, wing area, etc?

We don't know yet. It all depends on the people's interest.
We will post step by step building process and work on the manual at the same time.

The WS is 54" area is 605 sq.in. It has built-in washout. Total weight should be no more then 6 lb.

Not to jump the gun but...... how about a MiG 3 next, I have always thought it to be the sexiest of the russian planes, and then the one in your avatar, I can not pronounce it properly let alone spell it.

all I have to say is Gimmegimmegimmegimme!!!!! I love it, just the ticket. A russian fighter plane in a size most of us could build and fly. I would love to see more 40 and 60 size warbirds. The fields I fly at are just too small to effectivly fly a big 1/4 or so scale plane. And factor in the cost I feel this is a prime market for someone to move into. I would buy a kit or even the plan for a bird like this. Be sure to post progress here. And congratulations looks good. BTW did you get the plans from the Crank Organ guy? I would like to know how did it go? does it work nice? Was it hard to build ect.

Mig-3?...... Good idea. What size? As a matter a fact, we do have couple more planes in the works. Mig-3 is on "To Do" list starting today.

For Mark'
CNC is our original design. I apologize for not giving more information about CNC.
Let's stay focused on the airplane project on this thread. Please feel free to PM me with your CNC questions.

Thanks for Your support.
Stay tuned for project process updates.

That would be the I-16 "Rata" or Rat made by the Polikarpov Design Bureau...Polikarpov also produced one of the best twin bombers of WWII...the PE-2...faster than the lend-lease Hurricanes the Russians flew.

You are right about I-16. Sorry, but Pe-2 was designed by Petlyakov.
They are on my todo list as well.

Cheers

mihaj,

Looks really good so far. If I can offer some suggestions however. First with the horizontal and vertical stabilizers being solid sheet it looks like the tail feathers are going to be pretty heavy. You may want to look at making more lightining holes in them. Second, it seems as you plan to sheet the turtle back portion of the fuse. If so I think your going to want to add another stringer on each side between the top stringer and the main longeron to support the sheeting. Other than that it's looking good so far. Can't wait to see the rest.

Good Luck,
Scott

Hi Scott,
We appreciate your attention and advice. We agree that the tail fathers look too heavy. But you'll be surprised how light they are especially after they shaped-up. We are using .25" balsa that typically light.
Regarding the turtle back. The distance between formers is pretty short (keep in mind it's a .40 sizer) and ones you apply the sheeting it creates a stressed surface which is rigid enough for this size of model.
Here is our first prototype that worked pretty well.

thanks for reminding me of the name, how do you properly pronounce Polikarpov?
I once did a MiG3 that I blew up from Gus Morfis 1/12 scale plans to a .25 size and have had the plans blown up to .40 size for some time but never took the time to work out landing gear issues. I used balsa sheeted foam wing, very strong, in cartwheel incident only broke tip of wing, destroyed fuse.

mihaj,

Ok well if it worked out ok on the prototype I guess you don't need the extra stringer. My thoughts that because it's a 40 size that the turtle back would probably be sheeted with 1/16 sheeting. I could just see myself sticking a finger through the sheeting in the unsupported area. Anyway hope to see this available soon. I'd grab one up in a second.

Good Luck,
Scott

Hi Scott,
I see where you coming from. And I totally agree with you. The plane is sheeted with 1/16 balsa. I think that any model plane should be handled with care.
But good thing is, the first prototype came out at only 5lb.(fixed gear though) It was our main goal to make the airframe as light as possible.
Pretty soon our first prototype is going to be converted to electric.

Thanks for sticking with us.
Any concerns or design ideas are appreciated.

Mike & George
