That's a Pfalz Aeroshmeckle or maybe its a Pfalz Schmeckenputz. Both were similar in appearance so I can't be certain.

Haha I knew it!

I love the passage of this airplane in the awesome book, Back to the Drawing Board by Bill Gunston. I HIGHLY recommend this book to everyone. In fact I think I'll put the origin of my screen name in here one of these days, Silvanskii being a very ill-fated designer in 1930's Russia (a hilarious story!).

Manufactured by the Safety Airplane Company of San Leandro, CA. This aircraft was put together with Parker Kalon self tapping metal screws, and these screws rattled out in flight by the bucketful. Replacing lost screws rant to 25% of the fuel bill. The airplane, designed by Greeks, promoted by Greeks, and sponsored by Greeks was "so good" that the company claimed that saboteurs were stealing them and actually hired investigators (Greek no doubt) to figure it out. The landing gear was linked to the throttle so that everytime the throttles were closed, the landing gear extended. The fuel tanks were made jettisonable by the pilot as well. The onboard toilet operated like the door on a Pullman railroad car, and was subject to different pressures and windspeeds.

This aircraft ended it's days as a movie prop, appearing in such films as Tarzan. It traveled more miles on the ground from set to set than it did in the air.

I suspect this is a "movie'd up version" as the original had a HUGE grotesque, FORWARD sloping windscreen (which was the IN thing to do at the time), as well as oval windows.

Man, that is one butt-ugly airplane... Looks like a DC3 that got caught in a hangar with a Curtiss Robin

Was so ugly, I coulda sworn the Brits built it

PK screws ???!!! Hoo boy - "Gee, there goes the wing, Captain!"
Now I know why one of the thinnest books in the world is "Great Greek Airplane Designs"!!

Cheers!

Jim
