I've recently acquired four 6-vold golf cart batteries and would like to use them in my R/C trailer. I don't know how to wire them (series or parallel) to achive 12 volts. Which is it?

I'd like to use all 4 batteries, meaning I'd have two pairs of batteries each at 12 volts. What is gained by 'strapping' them together and maintaining the 12 volt output?

Regards,

UsedBits, This is a question "up my alley".
Recreation Vehicle Industry advisors encourage the use of Golf Cart Batteries due to their size, weight, and durability. Here is how to get a good strong 12 volts out of all 4 batteries at once.
Connect the neg.(-) of one of them to the pos.(+) of another one. Now do the same with the other two.
Now connect the unused Neg.(-) of one pair to the unused neg.(-) of the other pair.
Then conncet the unused Pos(+) of one pair to the last open terminal, the unused Pos(+) of the other pair.
Now this will provide 12 Volts, double amperage, at the connected (+) and (-) terminals. It should last twice as long as only one pair connected in series. The only draw-back is that the "weakest" battery, if one exists, will loose amperage first. If they are equal (specific gravity test of the electrolite, or acid) You will have a servicable, long lasting 12 volt power source for your trailer. This is recommended in R.V.'s more often than two 12 volt units in parallel. Charging will put more of a load on the charger, so don't overload the car/truck alternator when charging, "on-the-road". I have been enjoying self-contained, motorized R.V.'s (motor homes) for over 15 years and read a lot on what is best for electrical sources.

Golfcart batteries are "deep-cycle" and will tolerate long discharge and recharge much better than automotive batts.

Thanks, Mild Bill! It turns out that I have six 6-volt batteries. I assume that the additional two can be wired into your schematic by extension. Or, I could have 4 as 12 volts and also 2 as 12 volts (but at the same amperage, I'm assuming) for separate use.

Next question: can an extra set of batteries in the trailer be charged as the car is running (on the road)?

Next next question: is there a one-way device (other than a switch) to enable the batteries to be charged by the vehicle but not drain the vehicle's battery when the trailer batteries are in use?

USEDBITS: I told you about a one-way device called a BATTERY ISOLATOR available from recreation vehicle dealers and www.campingworld.com
They are automatic, and I've had 3 motor homes on which they are mounted, and they work fine. They the engine on the unit, or tow vehicle is running, it charges both sets of batteries, and when it is stopped, the batteries are disconnected from each other.(trailer or "house" batteries are not connected with the one that starts the vehicles motor)
BUT RCairport gave me a new alias, Bill L. instead of MILD BILL, and instead of member Bill. I do not see the post I mentioned about the battery isolator in this list. Anyway, watch out now for weight and where you put all those batteries, and how your trailer balances both side to side, and hitch weight!
You are using highly recommended methods of providing 12 V DC current that will last for you.

UsedBits, how has the battery powered trailer worked for you? Flying time is at hand here in Ohio and probably long underway in Arkansas. Some of my last message was not clear. I wanted to say:
When the engine is operating on the tow vehicle (auto, truck) both sets of batteries get the charge, engine battery, and auxilliary batteries (Those in the trailer) When the engine on the tow vehicle is off, the two battery sets are disconnected, so the tow vehicle's starter battery is not discharged while you use the trailer batteries.
Now I feel it is clear Yes, you could use a simple on/off single pole single throw switch to do the same thing, and I did on my first camper van. It worked too, BUT I had to remember to include it in my stop/start up sequence or I'd leave it on all night, and have a dead "van" battery in the morning, but lights all night long in the camper van.
