I was looking into getting a new charger at tower the other day and I realized that the really good chargers were all DC current. Why is this? Is there some kind of adantage over AC when charging a battery with a direcxt current. Another thing is there any thing you can use to get a DC charger to run off an outlet in your house instead of having to get a car battery to charge your RC's batteries.

All batteries are charged with DC. Chargers that run from AC convert the charge voltage/current to DC. If you have a DC charger and want to use it on AC you will have to buy a DC power supply, a device that gives you DC from AC line. Such devices are available on line from a number of sources.

Here are three on line sources at good prices.

As I've noted in other threads, an old PC pwr supply makes a great, cheap, (but ugly) supply. I scrounged an old 486 supply for $0 that had a 7 amp rating on the 12V side and put a 15 ohm, 15 watt (5 watt will do, or a 10 ohm, 5 watt) power resistor across the 5 volt (black and red) wires to load the PS so it will come on. Just make sure the 12V side is rated for the amps needed for your charger.

A lot of people have done this with success. I haven't tried it because I haven't needed another supply. But the next time I run across a discarded computer I'm going to give it a try just to know more about it.
