i've seen those. as a matter of fact, one million dollars worth of goverment grants in the form of an ornithopter crashed head first into a chair right in front of me. it was for spy purposes, built by aerovironment. They are very interesting

In the height of the PBF craze I made this X-wing version consisting of two 24" square PBF's. I had election signs so I used them. It could take off, hover, transition to forward flight, then go back to a hover 3D style, then hover down for a "landing". I almost had it sitting on it's elevons several times, but it would tip over (harmlessly). I set it up with elevons, and rudderons so that all four surfaces could hold it against engine torque, plus there were four more smaller flaps near the engine. It worked great with no gyros. Later versions were done with discs called the X-Ball. I have pics of two of those on my web site www.hoverbatics.com in the photo gallery.

wingspan...now that is something unique, something awesome, something sneaky and something cheap.......where can i get plans...or maybe just instructions or whatever it takes to get one of those together? How is it flying that thing ?Do you get a little disoriented? Inquiring minds wanna know.....

Well it flies really weird but not unflyable. I used rudder to make turns, it keeps it upright, although banked turns makes it look like an X-wing fighter. I suggest using a two-channel gyro from Hobbico on the elevons, it will allow the elevon mixing to pass through, yet give aileron corrections to counter torque pulses from throttle movements. I used one on the X-Ball which needed it more than the PBX-Wing. One thing I discovered is that it will do a very tight rolling circle with the mere application of full aileron one way or the other, in fact it slowly climbs in the circles.
I don't have any plans for it, it's all in my head still.
If you want a materials kit, I can make one for $35. I can mark up the materials with a pen for cutting elevons, torque doors, etc.

wingspan , draw me up a set of plans and a materials list. I am very interested and will try anything once...ok twice. what are these torque doors and how do they work? Let me know when and where and I will send you the cash. Thanks......

how about you try drawing some plans urself instead of using allready existing things.
design something new, something spontaneous
something which nobody has done before

Here it is my circuit for the 4 rotor helicopter. You can see the 4 MOSFETS and a Motorola MC68HC11E9 microcontroller.
Now I need the motors, the gearboxes, the props and all the mechanical stuff.
SPACECLAM:
I followed your advice and ordered the 10x4,5 props from TODD'S MODELS.
What gearbox have you used? Brand and reduction ratio.
Is your 300 motor rated 6V or 7,2V. I've heard there's a big diference in terms of current draw.
Another question for all:
Can I get nude piezo-gyros? (I mean the chip without all the RC interface) so they're cheaper and I can solder them directly to my circuit board and read the analog signal with the A/D inputs of the microcontroller.

have you ever heard the expression when pigs fly?
started working on the idea because I was tired of the flying lawnmower and witches.
going to use pink foam for a profile pig and the same for the wings and tail but going to shape them like birds wings .
working on the same idea as the ski jumper.

If you just want to show up the lawmmower guys make it a riding tractor.

i used the gws eps 300c-c gearboxes. those run compact 370 motors, and are 5.33:1.

WINGSPAN: how much torque correct do you end up manually doing to achieve level flight?
SPACECLAM: why do you use gearboxes on your motors? they decrease speed and increase torque by a factor of 5.3: does this mean that an un-gearboxed motor will not turn the props sizes that you're currently turning?

Sorry about the newb. questions: I'm new at this!

The PBX-Wing needs very little torque correction in level flight. Once the thing transitions to level from vertical flight, the horizontal wing starts making lift and this seems to hold it against the engine torque.

no, an un-gearbozed motor would spin a prop no more than 3 inches across without burning up my esc. larger props swinging slower are more efficient than smaller props swinging really fast. if i put a direct drive propeller on, i would get only about 4 oz out of each motor, and in a prodject like this, you need the larger rotors to decrease the rotor disk loading and make it more responsive to imputs. even though they are spinning slower, they produce about 14 oz thrust apice. by gearing themn down like this i get more thrust from the bigger prop but i do not use any more or less amps. as for the torque, it does not matter because i have counter-rotating props on there if you look at my pic on the 1st page closely

Thanks, guys!

Spaceclam: Regarding the torque, I was referring to the PBX wing.

P.S. since you're using a gearbox of 5.33:1, what's the theoretical upper torque limit? I would have assumed it would be over 20 oz, as you said you were getting around 4 oz before it. is there an online resource that can help me to understand this crap better?
