Music wire will eat up any cuttters you get. Good music wire is almost as hard as "ToolProof" steel.

Instead... mark it where you want to cut with a sharpie or somethig... and get out a file. (or a dremel cut-off wheel) cut a small grove all the way around the wire (as if wanting to make a snap-ring grove) and it will snap easilly.

Lee, you are a wealth of information (as are all the others).

Lee, after opening up that slot a bit in your Z bend pliers, do they still work for 1/16 wire, or just for the next larger size?

I guess I was lucky when I bought the new pair of diagonal cutters, because there are the pro type from Sears. I doubt if I still have the receipt though. Think I will need the receipt if they ever go bad? There's no question that they are from Sears anyway.

Okay, so which brand of Z pliers should a guy buy? The "pinned" ones from Hobbico?

Ernie

Texas is a big state. Are you ashamed of the part you live in?

Ernie

You made a good choice on the diagonal cutters. The reason for purchasing this brand is that they have a lifetime warranty and the MFG will replace them free if they wear out. You do not need a receipt for Sears life time warranty.

The first pair of these that I had the tip of one side chipped off. I don't know how. The young gentleman replaced them without asking for a receipt.

The pair that I am using now is approx. 3 yrs old. The cutting edge that I use are just bright and shinny. I do a lot of 1/16" piano wire cutting.

Are you needing another spinner nut? If so let me know before the weather get too good and you get caught short. Remember you need a spair.

When you grind the Z bend pliers grind as little as you can. Then make a test and decide whether it needs more. You will be surprised how little it will require.

As you seen in the previous photos Mine still works on 1/16" wire.
I am still trying to find out who carries this brand of Z pliers.

Good flying

Just want to add... anealling the hardened wire (Commanly used in arfs) where the Z bend will be formed will remedy the problems of breaking the wire while forming the Z bend. I use a small torch and heat the spot to a cherry red and let cool normally.

BTW I have used many methods and tools to form z bends but the yellow handle z bend tool is as good as it gets...worth every penny IMHO.

Thanks for adding your information about annealing. I had forgotten about that.

Do you know where to by the yellow handle Z bend pliers. I have had mine for about 15 yrs.

Thanks again

I am sorry to say I don't know where to get another pair...or who made them for certain. I also have had mine more than 15 years (maybe 20+) and as I recall they were pricy comparatively. I have since bought two other pair, one made by Great Pains and a type from Hanger Nine. I loan out either of the later two but the yellow handle type never leave the shop!

Thanks again for your input. You are like me when I get a good tool that works for a particular function I do not want that tool to walk away from me.

Thanks again and happy flying

The Troll, Maybe, but wait until you try Du-Bro's....they don't produce stress marks and make the bend 90 degrees, not 85+/-
