I'm keen as curry to get back in to this 1/2A stuff but still have a few questions:

1. I have some old Futaba S20 servos I bought about 20 years ago. I've re-wired them with a Hitec connector, adjusted the centering, cleaned the pot and they work pretty well -- but they only have 22 ounce-inches of torque (albeit with a ball-bearing output shaft and metal gears). Believe it or not, the last thing I flew with these servos was an OS45-powered (with tuned pipe) flying wing that flew at about 120mph -- and they handled the job marvelously. However, they're still quite a bit heavier than the current generation of mini-servos such as the Hitec HS81 so I think I'll just bite the bullet and buy some new ones.

Should I opt for the HS81 or the lighter (yet weaker) HS55?

I see that Hitec have a new microservo on the market called the HS-56HB but, despite its "karbonite" gears, it seems a step backwards because hit has less torque than the cheaper HS55 and the no-load operating current is an incredibly high 400-500mA (versus just 150-180mA for the HS55). The HS-56HB also has dual mounting lugs for vertical or horizontal mounting -- but I think this would be more of a disadvantage in some tight-squeeze applications.

For the record, I've already picked up a Hitec 555 micro-FM receiver and a 270mAH battery pack but was thinking of getting another flight-pack and have been eyeing up the cheap single-conversion receiver from Hitec -- has anyone used one of these yet?

In fact, what gear are most people using in their 1/2A flight packs these days?

2. Despite my best searching on the Net, I can't find anyone who sells the Norvel engines and accepts PayPal. If anyone reading this has a Big Mig .061 or 074 that they want to sell, please let me know. Alternatively, if anyone lives within spitting distance of a retailer who sells them then I'd be happy to fire you off the money via PayPal if you'd be prepared to pick one up and mail it off to me. Can anyone help?

HI XJET! For starters, the 555 is a good choice. I have been using a GREAT PLANES 4CH featherweight with good results for a short while. It has a 900' range. The HS55s have gone on some pretty wild rides so far with out any failures. I use the HS81s only for COMBAT, or extreme RPM planes anymore. If you have any aspirations to fly 4CH these will only cost you a little over an oz. I have some 150 MAH NIMH packs that aren't even worth weighing, and some 210 NIMH that aren't much heavier. Standard equipment for me any more is home made 1/16" plywood control horns, and 1/16" wire to connect point A to B. All you need to do is bend a V shaped kink in the wire for adjustment.

I just went through this a little while back, and was shown that the electron 6 or the 555 receiver was the way to go. I also was advised to get the HC81 servos. That seems to be the package that many are using with great success.
I bought the featherlite receiver and some HC50 servos, and had to hang them up as being too weak for the 1/2A planes that I am flying. Great for park flyers, and some have used the featherlite with no problems, but I did hear about some bad experiences with it and the gas stuff.

Here is the thread where I got my advice.

I fly a 54" four channel with 5 HS81 servos. It is powered with an OS .20 and moves along fairly well. The HS81 servos are a pretty snug fit in the wings, one for each aileron, but they will power anything on the airplane. The receiver is a 5 channel Hitec hard cased 555. I use a Hitec 555 feather and two HS55 servos on my slow stick and they are most adequate. This airplane is not a 3D sky burner so the small weight of the servos is important.

I found this site which accepts PayPal and has a few Norvel accessories. You could try contacting them to see if they can get the engines.
http://www.rlhobbies.com/store.php

I sent an email to my LHS to see if they can accept PayPal. I'll let you know when they get back to me.

If I were to buy an engine and ship it to you there would be GST and PST charged plus I'd get dinged by PayPal, so it would be a fair bit cheaper to buy direct from a hobby shop.

Have you tried contacting Norvel/Shopatron to see if they can accept PayPal?
