Remember, when the aircraft is still on the ground take off IS optional. I never take off without checking the control surfaces for the proper direction of travel. Yes, he handed you the transmitter, but you are the one who proceeded to take off and fly. It's your responsibility. Whether or not this other guy is a half bucket of prop wash is another matter. I'm surprised he is allowed to fly at your field if he is as bad as you suggest. The good thing about this whole matter is no one was hurt. Like I used to tell my soldiers, "Chalk it up as a lesson learned and don't do it again!"

Although there are exclamation points on the end, I would belive that to be a question with poor punctuation.
On a better note, I would have checked the controls before take-off just because that is a force of habit that I have attained over the last 2 years of flying. Therefore I have never had the misfortune of taking off with backwards ailerons.
I do belive that you, cafeenman, are not completely at fault. If I were in your position, I would trust that the other pilot would have taken the time to check his model for proper flight before readying it for takeoff. Because it crashed, I would offer my help and SOme financial assistence in fixing the plane but you are in no way completely responsible for his initial mistake. Like someone mentioned earlier, maybe he just needs some guidence to get going in the right direction.

Seems to me if you accept the controls, you accept responsiblity... If you hadn't checked the controls during your earlier "inspection", then it would be worthwhile to do so if you were handed the box, even if it delays takeoff... Agree that you have some responsibility for the damage- if you assist him in rebuilding the remains, perhaps you can instill improved workmanship on his part??

Cheers!

Jim

CafeenMan,
You're an intelligent, thoughtful individual; I've seen that on RCU often enough. Don't pay any attention to the childish rants of some, who are obviously neither.

The fact that you are asking the question indicates that you do at least feel partially 'guilty' about the issue. Redardless of who is to blame, and despite the fact that sh1t happens, I would just re-build the plane. I find that the times I am questioning myself about an issue, it is better to err on the side of caution. Make the offer to rebuild. You have more than enough experience at building, so the outcome should be very fine. Worst that can happen is that the guy can say "yes" and not offer any "part-way" in terms of finances. Then it costs you time and material. TIme for you may be a problem, and material a littl bit too, but I am guessing thast you have plenty of scrap material around... enough to fix the plane without being too much out-of-pocket.

The fact that you question yourself means to me that it is a "no brainer" decision, just to get it off your conscience.

If there were radio/engine damage, I personally would offer to fix all the plane, but not the mechanicals/electricals.

CafeenMan,
If you were the PIC, then I would feel your 100% responsible. It was your choice to pull back on the elevator before doing a pre-flight. Sorry for the loss.

BTW, Torq25, your reply was not a very good introductory of your character (only 3 posts) to this forum. It was neither tactful nor funny.

Scott

Well, I do honestly feel really bad for it and this thread was not intended to gather support to get me off the hook. I called the man yesterday and offered to have him bring his plane over and we would get it fixed. Actually, he would stand at watch the master at work and maybe learn something.

He said that he would think about it and get back to me. So at this point my conscience is clear. If he takes me up on it, I will fix anything on his plane that needs fixing to include replacing those EZ-connectors with solder clevises or maybe quick connectors with L-bends or something better than what he has now.

Thanks for all your comments. I'm glad some people had the courage to state that I was 100% responsible even though I don't entirely agree with that. But I was afraid I would get too many responses absolving me of all blame which wouldn't be honest or fair.

Hi CafeenMan,

I just want to tell you 2 things,

First this is a hobby, its for fun, and you know when you take up a palne you dont know if it will go down safe, although you are the best pilot. OK?

Second If you help him to fix the plane, teach him, which are the main points of security to setup the plane, he needs to learn by himself or watching you, to do the things. You or someone else, will not be forever in the field to help him.

Get peace in mind, take it easy, and dont worry, its just my point of view.

Thanks

Raul
Sorry for my english, its not quite well.

Paul,

Agreed - think you could turn a negative into a positive if his building skills are improved by the process... Your upgrading the construction/rigging is a great idea. Most folks want to build good models, some never learned how . This will give him a "crash course" (sorry, couldn't resist ) in proper building techniques... Bravo!

Cheers!

Jim

Yea Paul, sounds like you guys could have some fun and comraderie. We had done things like you have suggested due to mid-airs. When that happens, we shrug our shoulders and arrange a time to bring a 6 pack and have some "rebuild" sessions. ( that is where you have 6 guys standing around drinking beer and giving directions while one guy does all the work )
