Jerkey -> Supernova NIMH Results (5/29/2002 10:15:55 AM)

I have had a FMA SuperNova for about a year give or take a few months. I have been hearing the negativity about the SuperNova's inability to detect NIMH battery peak. So I borrowed a buddies brand new NIMH since I only use NICD"S. Here are the results I got. First the battery is a 1200mah 4 double A cell. I set the charger up manual for NIMH. Charge was set at 1.2A and Discharge was set at 1.0A. It discharged 130 mah in 7 minutes 43 seconds and charged 458mah in 22 minutes 7 seconds. Now I see why SuperNova owners are complaining.

Thanks,

Mike

dant-RCU -> NiNH on Supernova (5/29/2002 5:32:39 PM)

Jerkey:

Not sure what is happening here. I have a Supernova and now use only NiMH batteries. I have not experienced any problems at all. I do not use the Supernova to discharge I use an Einstien for that and I do believe the Einstien discharges at a less than 1.0A but I don't see that making any difference. I don't have a real reason to "fast discharge" and since I have the Einstien I use that as I can just plug it into a wall socket. I only discharge my packs twice a year to check capacity anyhow (January and June/July) and I follow the "4 years or 80% rule".

I do know that all of the battery clinics that I have read regarding packs (NiMh and NiCad) all state that you MUST fully charge a new pack using the overnight charge rate before any reliable discharge/fast charge data can be obtained. Dave Thacker at Radical RC has an excellent discourse on NiMH batteries. Since you have a "brand new pack" you might want to do the full overnight charge (full being 15-16 hours) then do the cycle/charge on the Supernova.

All of my NiMH packs (Tx and Rx) are 1200 - 1450 Mah. As I stated, I just have not seen a problem with my setup. Then again, maybe there is something that I just am not aware of but this has been my experience.

You might also want to send an e-mail to FMA direct. Fred and Tim have been very good about answering questions regarding their products.

Charge the numh pack for 18-20 hours at a C/10 charge. Once done, then cycle the pack, then charge on the Super Nova.

Your results will be much better, but I doubt if it will put all the capacity back in the pack. What you experienced is whu nimh packs need to be cycled first. If that pack was in a plane or heli, 2nd flight it would have died. That is exactly what happened to friend of mine.

Let us know your results.
