Here's a dandy link that shows exactly how the Spandaus mount in an Albatros.

I just ordered mine the other day and have since been pondering the engine I will use. In speaking with the owner of Funaero he mentioned that while any of the 90 4 strokes would be good, he was sure that the OS 91 was a good fit being that they made a muffler adapter to keep the exhaust in the cowl. In looking around however, I have also seen that many people offer at least some way of doing this so I am a bit unclear as to what drives people to get the different engines... I would first be very interested to hear why some chose the Saito 91 or 100 and extremely interested in hearing from anyone that might have used a YS 91 (fit with supercharge airbox) or the OS 91P (with internal fuel pump)... In the end I realize many will be overpowered but I have needed some reserve power from time to time to get out of trouble and if nothing else, it is a comfort to have... I mostly want reliability to keep it in the air but with all the engines out there, certainly could use some words of wisdom from those of you with experience who know...

I chose the Saito 91-Saito because of quality-figured any company that only built 4 strokes has to be on the cutting edge to survive-talked to Mike at Funaero and 91 is more than enough power, scale flying at 1/2 throttle, takeoff at 2/3 throttle. Built a in cowl straight pipe for muffler, really has a neat sound and not that much louder, not that stopped up tone that you get with muffler-cut stock nipple in half, brazed 90 degree copper fitting to nipple, and brass pipe out bottom of cowl.

Would not be too hard to just run brass pipe up and out by mock engine just like the original, but wanted to keep fuel and oil off plane. You will enjoy building the kit - it is top notch. Just a few little glitches between drawings and instructions but parts fit is great. Flipstart

Nice job on your Alby. I've got my fuse basically done. Using an OS 65 LA with a Pitts muffler. Got a big hole in the side of the cowl for the air to go in, and a bigger one in the bottom for it to go out, hopefully.

Nice kit. Very high quality wood and laser cutting.

Flipstart, an excellent source for information on the Albatros DIII is from the "Wise Owl Worldwide Publications" Windsock Datafile #19 www.WiseOwlMagazine.com (310) 944-9963 Mike FunAero R/C

Any thoughts out there of converting the DIII to a W4 Seaplane? Same airframe as the DIII, but on floats, I believe I read in the Datafile...
Also, someone further back in the thread was looking for a 1/4 scale D-Va? You can get a full kit (Pepino plans) for $260 from Kit Cutters [ http://www.kitcutters.com/Pep/PepD5AAlbatross.htm ], or a short kit (as I recall) from Bob Holman at www.bhplans.com.
Regards...

I believe the Float plane version has the DII wing, lacking the DIII's sesquiplane construction (not that many would know the difference). If you knew you were making it from the start, you could order the DII kit instead of the DIII. I have not started on my Albatros yet, but I'm thinking a 14X6 prop will work fine with a .91 four stroke. Wood of course for that somewhat scale look.

I own a small cabinet shop, we do alot of clear coating on Baltic and chineese birch. Your faux wood paint job is very very near perfect to the thin birch veneers we use. Wow. I am impressed. Ok, my two cents worth, gotta go order that kit now. Sheesh, more money not going to my daughters college fund. Maybe I will get lucky and she will drop out of school. Just think of all the RC stuff I can spend her college fund on, Muahaha!

Wow, my thread seems to have taken on a life of its own!

Unfortunately my Albatros is still not done... "Life got in the way" as they would say and I had to put the project aside for a year. Now I've got the time to finish it though, and seeing that others have built and flown theirs in the meantime I've got some work to do!!! Great looking planes guys.

To JHarkin,

I am into scale planes but has no time to build. If I provide you the kit, could you build it into ARC for me? Very handsome but reasonable compensation will be offered. Call me at 505-459-7520 if you are or anybody interested. Please, professional builders please. Thanks.

Hello,

I have a question regarding the time it takes to go from kit to ARC. I am fairly an experience kit builder. Thanks.

The Saito 91 has worked out great for me! I have had no overheating problems whatsoever with the engine, I did leave about a 1/4'' gap between the spinner and fuselage.
I am using a wood zinger 15-5 prop and it seems to be doing a good job. With the Saito .91 because of the thick spinner most props won't leave enough thread to safely tighten down the prop locknut.

Feuerwehr-I also have a Albatros DIII with Saito 91-decided to go with a APC prop as wood props tend to loosen under pressure and that spinner is a bear to take off or put on. First tried a 14/8 and the hub was too thick for a lock washer. Ordered a APC 15/6 to look more scale and walla-the hub was thinner and worked great-go figure. I scuffed up the prop with 320 grit paper-painted it a light cream color and used wood stain to simulate wood and coated with PU. Some work but it looks more like the real props than the wood props that are available. Use 2 colors of stain and you get a good wood grain effect. Now if the 15/6 is not too much prop for the 91 I will be set for flight soon. Flipstart

Flipstart, Thanks for the info. You are right, removing the spinner to retighten the prop is a pain. I am happy to hear the APC 15-6 will tighten down. I will definitely try the APC. Feuerwehr

I finally got started on my Funaero Albatros. Something out of the ordinary I'm putting on mine is an amplified machine gun sound module with a 4 inch speaker, and super bright LED's wired thru a flasher circuit in the gun barrels. I'm doing a paint scheme of a plane flown by Lothar Richtofen, brother of the Red Baron. You can see in the photo that the Baron himself (1/6 scale version) is providing me with some assistance.

Here is my Albatross DIII all ready to fly, well almost-just about complete, need to add a little nose weight even with 2 batteries located far forward. Came out ok, wish I had put shear webs in lower wing, it seems a little too flexible to me. Guess I will find out on first flight. Flipstart

Final shot of the tail feathers, a scale modeler from Ireland sent me the artwork for Albatross logo, Maltese crosses and black/white band were hand painted (you can tell I shake too much). Decals were computer generated and laser printed on water slide paper. Entire plane is fuel proofed with Minwax Poly U. Flip

Hey Hot Rod-let us know how the machine gun sound with light flashes works. Saw that setup but with all the other items I had to think about decided to wait until next time. Where did you mount the speaker?

Thought about an onboard glow with battery located in bottom of cowl (need a little nose weight any) but seems like everything eventually gets oil soaked, so I abandoned that idea. Do have a homemade circuit drawn up if anyone needs one-uses Hangar 9 harness with outside jack for backup, led indicator light and micro switch for on/off, and master switch to turn on/off. Flip

The speaker is mounted under the machine guns, above the servo tray. Here is a photo showing the mount. Also, check out the scale radiator I made out of plastic for the top of the wing.
