    J, you can use minwax or deft poly clear over ply veneer and it looks great. This is what I used on the interior portion of my SE5a. Hopefully you can see the results in this photograph. I must admit that the minwax poly was extreemly easy to work with. Im not sure on the nitro effect thought. I have read that Deft is about 6x's more durable. I'm going to find out because I have a Proctor Albi comming and I want to have a clear wood fuse.

    So you dont think I've stopped building...

    This is where I am at right now. Most of the framing is done, time to start the hard parts (controls,
    sheeting, detailing)

    Yes it is coming along fast. However I think progress is going to slow down as I am now into the more time consuming areas - fuse sheeting, detailing, etc. Im still hoping to have it ready for the New England Scale Masters at the end of June but that might be tight if I dont pick up the pace.

    Oh and what I wouldnt give to do a Proctor or Torrance kit... I think I need some more experience and a bigger car first though.

    Jeremy, good luck making your deadline. I'm hoping to finish my se5a for the ny scale masters n august! And i think you have sufficient experience for either the proctor or GTM.. those are easier to build than you might think.

    I'm also anxious to see how Jeremy is coming along with his albatros. His posts inspired me to go out and order a DIII myself! I started building early last month and am very pleased with kit quality, and how well the laser cut parts fit.
    Like Jeremy I was not sure how to proceed with the wood grain fuselage. I decided against using real plywood after some trial and error practice with scrap 1/32. I reluctantly decided I don't have the requisite skill and patience to do a credible job. (If I could afford a proctor DV maybe I would try a little harder!}
    After looking around for alternatives I decided to go ahead and cover with super coverite then dry brush with minwax honey maple gel stain on top of a coat of rust-oleum almond spray paint over primer. Everything is sealed with minwax clear satin polyurethane. I bench tested this combination and it seems to provide a passable wood grain appearance, although obviously not as nice as real plywood. The photos below show the vertical stabilizer with the "fake" wood grain.
    These are a few "bare bones" fotos. I also did some minor mods to the tail section to provide rudder and horizontal stab "ribs". The aircraft will be finished to simulate one of Ernst Udet's DIII's.

    Your albi looks very goood from the pictures. I think your attempt at a "wood" finish will be fine. Tom Polapink did a rendition of the fake wood using paint kinda like you did and it looked very good. There was a write up about it in one of the issues of RCSI.. Keep us posted of your progress please!!

    Hi Bob-

    Im still here. The Albatros has been on hold for a while, unfortunately work priorities have suddenly changed and I now find myself with a lot less time - not to mention that weekends are now spent flying . Right now Ive switched to finishing a sport plane that I was close to covering and taking a bit of a break before I tackle that fuselage sheeting. I hope to be back on track working on it by June and may plan on first flights in the fall. (I work slow)

    I do have more pics... just have to egt around to posting them

    Feuerwehr, Im impressed. 2 months and you look ahead of me - very nice bird. I'll be interested to see how your fuse comes out. I actually did the plywood sheeting on the fin with 1/64 (came out nice) but the fuse is going to be a bear.

    Looks good! I was thinking of doing mine in what I believe to be the same scheme. I don't think I'll get around to building it until this winter though.
    I'll attempt to post the photo.
