    Hey BM,

I'd be nice to see a photo of the exhaust system you've come up with. I've been thinking of getting a D.III as well and would not be going electric.

    Thanks,
    Darren

    Hi Darren,
It is just a straight pipe that Kelvin from Keleo Creations made for me. I will try and get a picture for you on Sunday.

The power system consists of Tower Pro 4130-8T outrunner (E-Flite Power 60 equivalent), 60 amp opto ESC, 5Volt BEC. 6s 3600 lipos (four 3s 1800 25C packs) and probably a 16x10 prop. I haven't tested the motor so that may not be the one I end up using. I'm shooting for about 1000 watts at a pitch speed of about 50 MPH. The motor and batteries will fit nicely in the cowl. I did cut the cowl internal structural parts down so I'd have more room to fit the batteries. But otherwise it's basically stock.

Thanks;-) Compared to yours, my paint scheme will be a bit simple, though.
I just can't resist having red wings and black crosses. Something a bit sinister about it, you know? Bwahahaha!

    Hi,

I have the AXI 60 in mine and it only needs 1/2 power to fly well. I used 8 cell Lipo but you can get away with 6. Are you going to modify the tail skid to make it into a DV? I did not add much details in mine since I was worried about the weight. However, after being flown you can have some room to add details without affecting flying characteristics. Gary at Getstencils.com cut the stencils for me. Make sure you ask him to increase the white border width on the fuse crosses as they are too thin. I look foward to see how to duplicate the wood panels. DP

I'm going to leave it as a DIII. The model is so far out of scale that using an incorrect, or unverified, color scheme doesn't bother me a bit. I had to modify the tail skid to match up with the proper OAW outline from the kit and it looks good to me.

I'm going to finish the wood only with polyurethane. I'm not going to attempt to duplicate the paneling. With my painting skills, it would just turn out looking horrible anyways. The sheeting was applied in close to scale sections so when the tinting and clear finish is applied it should look acceptable.

I'm going to make my own stencils for the crosses. I scanned them in from a book on Albatros fighters. I'll print them out on printer paper, trace them onto the surface and then paint them by hand.

I hope to be flying at around 11 lbs. That may be a bit optimistic. Since I'm using a very light finishing method on the tail, I hope to not have to add a lot of weight to the nose to get to balance. I did a preliminary balance as the model is now and it is slightly nose heavy, and that's without the prop. Even if I have to add a pound of weight to the nose to balance, the model has a lot of wing area and the power should still be greater than scale.

Try a light coat of Minwax Golden Oak to add the correct yellow hue prior to clear coating. It will then fade to a real cool "blonde" color over the coarse of the first flying season.

A way to get the wood stain correctly is to have your dog pee on it. I have some balsa soaked in Lulu's pee and it ages so well. The problem is you need to entice your dog to mark the fuse (you can take your neighbor's dog pee and paint on it). For some reason, dog's urine can duplicate WW1 wood so well. DP
