Todd, may I suggest you get some ground level shots of this beauty. It really does deserve the full treatment. I might suggest a dirt patch instead of grass for a better scale photo effect.

Also how about a quick summary of all the scale mods you did on it? Did you change the size or location of anything -- or just go all out on the detailing?

I plan to get some good shots of the plane this spring, it was just nice enough to be outside. I didn't really change anything in the kit during the build other than the rudder profile. It is still sport scale. I wouldn't say I went "all out" on the detailing, but I wanted the plane to be eye catching and interesting to look at. Many of the scale pieces, like the radiator, engine, pilot, guns, turned out better than I thought they would. The aluminum tape worked well for the cowl, hatches, and vents. I used the paint methods outlined earlier in this post, and think it turned out well. Since this is an earlier DIII, the photos and artwork show a darker wood on the fuse. There is some discussion as to the real color of the stain used on these planes and the effects the film at the time had on the "yellow" color, but the documentation I have is this color wood.

    Fantastic looking Albatross Todd!
Can you tell me more about the sound and light kit for the guns you metioned in a earlier post?
I might just have to get one for my Siemens Schuckert D1

The sound module is a RAM machine gun sound, but I added an amplifier into the circuit and used a much larger speaker. Two 9V batteries in series provide the power. I made an oscillator circuit to drive the super bright LED's that are on the ends of the gun barrels. Both are actuated using an electronic RC switch that I found the schematic for on the web. Even with all this work, I'd say that it will not be easy to hear, I'll have to cut the engine and do a close fly-by. They are more impressive on the ground than in the air. Also, the speaker, batteries, and electronics weigh nearly a pound. I think I'll take them out for the maiden just to be safe.

Todd, I have one of those in my Eindecker, I am not impressed. Sounds great on the ground but you really cant hear it even with a low slow flyby.

I'm considering building the Funaero kit but I have a concern: how does this Albatros handle on the ground? It seems to be quite short coupled. How about in the air in windy days?

    Thanks for any input!

Not dead, I myself have not yet finished the final assembly. I am not sure how many others have either and or have taken the first flight.

I have not yet taken the first flight, so I can't comment on ground handling. I have a hard, slick runway, so if it handles at my field, it should work anyplace. I doubt if I'll fly mine much on windy days, unless it's coming down the runway. I have too much time in it to have it dropped hard by a gust.

I have finished mine (Finally) I didnt go into as much detail or as good as HotRodTodd but I am pretty happy with how it looks, I will take the first flight tommorow weather permitting, and as this is Michigan that in itself will be a crapshoot. 85 degrees one day snow on the ground the next, sheesh. It is covered in SuperCoverite with Krylon paint, Magnum .91 for an engine and the exhaust is plumbed using high temp rubber tubing and a bracket for the muffler (we tested the tubing by trying to burn it with a propane torch, it didnt even melt)

Good luck on your Maiden Prop Nut. I finally got a couple flights on mine. First flight was pretty hairy due to the CG being too far back. I had to add quite a bit of nose weight to get it right. Make sure the tail is up or level when checking that CG. The subsequent flight was much better, and I was happy with the way the plane flew. I used a 15X5 wood prop. I am going to try a 14X6 and see if it improves the performance a bit. The torque on take off is not easy to deal with when using the big prop and no tail wheel on a smooth surface runway. When the weather gets better here, I hope to do some more trimming and make the plane more comfortable to fly.

I balanced mine out level using the farthest forward CG (right on the spar) it still took a pound of wieght. I will check it again, I would rather fly nose heavy than tail heavy any day. I am glad your flight went well, I was worried for you with all the work you had done on that plane. I usually dont bother to do so much as I will worry myself about pranging it up. I am going to go with a 14x8 wood prop, the 15x8 is on there now but I picked up the 14x8 yesterday. Thanks for the inspiration, guys like you and flipstart have been great.
