hi, i was wondering if anyone here has ever saw a 1/12 scale car go over 100 mph? i have a L3 and with 6 cells and and not very high gearing it pry goes 60- 70mph. i was thinking about running it again and tring to get it over 100. any suggestions besides a fast motor and really high gearing? and is a 1/12 scale considered a micro or mini? if it isnt sorry for wasting your time

Hi very good questions first of all i dont think most consider 1/12 scale either micro or mini. as for most mini means 1/18 scale and micro seems to incluse 1/24 scale and less. As for your question abpout a 100 mile an hour 12 scale rc car, well it can be done and it really isnt that hard to do, what is hard to do is control it cause at those speeds one good reck and kiss it goodbye. Just remeber your speed isnt just reliant on power there are a couple of other things that you need to consider. The first one is weight, the lighter the faster which means lots of light weight materials such as graphite, and dont forget thespeed control receiver or the servo, the smaller and lighter the better. The next thing is make sure your drive train is super efficient, which means not only bearings but the best bearings you can afford be it silicon or ceramic and follow the manufacturers directions on thier use and lubrication. Next is your motor and batteries. Good quality batteries that support a high discharge rate. If your open to experimentation try the new lithium cells out there you have two choices either lithium ionb or lithium polymer. A good set will giv you the same power at half the weight. Just keep in mind you need a charger especially made for them. as for your engine numer one thing make sure you brewak it in right, maintain kit properly, and gear it right whic means lots of pinions for experimentation, to much top end and not enough acceleration could mean by the time your car has reached top speed it may be outr of range, to much acceleration and you could find that your top speed dosnt peak out. Tjhe last thing I can think of is aerodynamics. make sure that the bottom is flush no screws haningin out. Now you have to pick a body. somthing low with as little frontal area as possible, something like a gtp works well or a canam type body. also an internal antena will cut your drag as the less drag you have the faster your going to go you will also have better balance. Lastly now you have allthis power a super ;light and aerodynamic car you have to be able to control it, so make sure that you keep the slop in the steering to the absolute minimum, and while you want a steering servo that islight as possible, it also has to be able to turn the wheels at this speed. Lstly make sure you have enough open space to wind it up and make sure its safe, you hit someone with a 2 pound car at 100 miles an hour well compare it to getting hit with a fastball with a lead weith in the center....ouch ouch ouch ouc....sothing is going to get broken.

And lastly let us all know how it goes I currently am driving a micro rs4 stock(18 miles an hour), a m-18 modified(25 miles an hour), and a brp supercar 18 higly modified with a custom fibreglass chassis, 14.4 vollt speed control, 2 7.2 volt litium ion batteries, full ceramic bearings, hpi wheel adapters, and a can am body(Ive only had this one to about 35 miles an hour but i can see it doing between 50 and 60 miles an hour, the thing is insane.

Hope this helps

Garry

thanks for your advice. ya it is really hard to control. everything is already really light, the car is mostly all carbonfiber and aluminum. there isnt much of a tranny. its a ball bearing driven diff gear with a carbon axle. the pinion gear supplies power directly to the diff. if i try it i will video tape it maybe and post it on here.

sounds like you have an excellent start to your 100 mile an hour car, to regain some of the control ltry dialing out some steering sensitivity, start at about 20 percent, and gpo from therfe and increase a little bit at a time till you feel most comfortable. Also recheckj your steering system and make sure you have 0 slopp. at 100 miles an hour your 1/12 scale car will have a scale speed faster then the speed of sound 1200 miles per hour. WOW. Also would love to see some video whwen your ready to go. Have fun.

ya i can control it but it is hard when i give it full throttle and its burning out. i think im gona wait untill it gets alot warmer outside(its about 10 degrees right now) and im gona try and get rubber tires. the foam tires dont grip good on pavement at all. unless i find a really long carpet track somewhere, it grips extremely well on certain kinds of carpet. when i do it i will try to get someone to video tape it for me, i dont have a digital video camera. i need to find a huge parkinglot without any rocks or obsicles in the way. thanks again.

hey there having grip problems are you, try this, take a squirt bottle and fill it with grape pop, and spray your lane where you plan to be driving this will increse the traction since grape pop is so sticky, remember to let it dry first but rubber tires not only will last longer on pavement but you ewill get better grip outside.

You may want to review the TechTV-Screen Savers post about the 111 mph RC10 since it has a few tips and a video.

Try 24 cells. The information is on the site or can be linked to from the site.

wow 24, that would melt most speed controls. i assure you that that is not the fastest rc car. maybe the fastest recorded by guennis. i have a video of a gas car going over 100 mph. i dont think that it would be very hard to break that guys record.

ive seen 1/8 indy rc cars go over 140 mph. this guy put a trnsmision that cange gears on an electric car. it was kinda like a gas car but it was electric.it had 2 540 modified motors in it. and 16 batteries the whole car was custom, hand made. it was so sweet to see this thing fly by. i was sitting in my gorage working on my jet ski and then i hear this thing flt by my garodge. it was going like 80 mph. so i walked out and he drove it by again and this time a little faster. it was screemin. when i heard it change gears i was like what, ive never seen that on a electric. he like made part of it out of a 3 speed gas car trans. he made it go by at over 120-140 once. then he stoped and showed me his car. it was all billet aluminum front and rear with a carben fiber chassis. and a fiberglass body. it had fiberglass covered foam wings and all kinds of stuuf. it looked like a delphi indy car.
