The subject line says it all. Tonight, I purchased the Xray M18 at one of the local hobby shops. I can't really write much about it because I haven't even opened the box yet other than it comes with a "free" Hudy phillips screwdriver. The box states that there is an optional "power pack #389100" which includes a speed controller, micro servo, motor and 5-cell battery pack. This reminds me of the Mini-T without the electronics with an option to purchase the "stock" electronics. Has anyone put the kit together yet and if so, what is your set-up? I figured that I would tackle that hurdle after I put the kit together which I plan to do during the week and not over the weekend.

Attached is a photograph of the M18 next to my newest Mini-Z-F1. So far I think I'll use a Futaba receiver and check into an airplane brushless in the morning.

The kit has fantastic full-color instructions and is very simple. I was unable to locate a Hacker brushless motor locally, but one of the local Micro RS4 owners pointed out a new advertisement for "another" coming soon micro brushless. For now, the kit may sit unless I decide to go ahead and use a "standard" set-up.

An ad for the Mamba is what was pointed out to me. Perhaps, I'll check out one18th again. I haven't visited that site (or at least I believe it was that site) since I was looking for Mini-T replacement servos. Then I decided not to go with any of the suggestions I read on that site since it appeared they were more into "gear" swaps and either didn't check into airplane servos or didn't want to do hardly any Dremeling. Whatever set up I eventually decide on, I'll post a picture.

It looks pretty fast, but it is hard to tell how fast and compare, at least for me anyway, since there are no other R/C cars in the video running next to it.

I was also thinking about using the 1100 and 1200 6-cell packs I use with my Mini-T with the Xray just for simplicity sake. However, I did notice they do stick out of the chassis ever so slightly. Crash and burn damage?

Do you know anything about the lithium packs? The lithium packs I've seen are very small. I also know that my Novak Millennium Pro won't charge them. I figured if I go that route I may shell out for an MRC 969 then I could used that charger to charge both the lithiums and my lead acid starter-box battery. I also didn't notice any photos on one18th.com of anyone using lithium packs in the 1/18th Xray though one person used a small 750 Ni-Mh pack which made the setup appear very neat and probably dropped the overall weight of the car itself.

i don't know much about the lithium batteries, but shawn palmer says when you go brushless a bettery is just a battery. but the lith batteries are really light.

I called one of the local hobby shops today and asked the owner to check into the Mamba Combo for me. I provided him with the contact information and projected release date. He told me the M18 should haul but that I was probably a little crazy. I simply told him if I didn't like the brushless in the M18, I could install it in my Mini-T and put the Mini-T's Chubby in the M18. In a way, I am more curious just to try the brushless motor since I have yet to try one though I've been tempted.

I also looked at the other servo I have but it is too large for the M18 chassis. Oh well. At least I didn't have to remove a bunch of electronics like I did with the Mini-T. Then again, I guess I didn't really have to remove the old Mini-T stuff. I just got bored with it after about a week or two.

Thanks. I decided not to go with the Mamba since I hadn't heard any specifics from Palmer though I did use a Castle Creations speed control. The motor mount required a little Dremel action for the screw holes and I used a body reamer to enlarge the center hole slightly to allow the brushless motor to fit. Basically, I went with what I found locally and thought the carbon fiber motor can was a nice touch. I just hope the gearing and mount will hold or it may be a very short run. The receiver is a Novak XXL. I also picked up the MRC 969 locally for $104.99 which is cheaper than the suggested retail price of $119.00.
