My transmitter looks identical to the one in the pic. Can you give me more detailed instructions as I don't want to destroy my controller. I have basic knowledge of electronics and am good at soldering. Any info would be very helpful. My transmitter is a Walkera 6ch. I can send pics if you need them. To Radioflyer2 - Thanks for the post. I tried it again - but as soon as I turn the Tx on I get the "invalid synch byte" message. I tried with the radio off, since at that point I get "waiting for stream init", but cannot get any apparent Tx input after setting FMS controls to joystick interface with the setting as recommended. I'm waiting for a new cable.

To Oops - I've adjusted the flybar with the weights near the ends. I had put some angle in the paddles, so thanks for the direction to put them flat. (The directions for this Walkera 4 leave a lot to intuition and guesswork). I didn't have much tab left on the plate so my springwire repair didn't last more than one battery life. I'm still using the training gear since I kept dinging the main blades every time I tried to take off in the driveway and the helicopter heeled over. I'm glad to hear you have been able to maintain a hover for a long time - something to shoot for. Thanks!

Hi Rweller,

They like to fall over on a smooth power-up... That really sucks... I can't fix that either... I think it's because it's so light and you need a little right roll on the swashplate to stop them shooting to the left (To counter the thrust from the tail rotor).

I usually get to 80% flying thrust, then "jump" the throttle up a few notches... This yanks it off the deck, and into an unstable hover... Sometimes it goes
straight up without a problem, but other times, it goes left or right a bit, and I have to catch it... Usually I get it about 2ft off the ground with that maneuver.

Then I drop down a notch or two to get to hover power. It balloons a bit, and at first, I landed on the down-cycle, but after practice, I managed to get it to hold altitude around 2 to 4 feet after liftoff.

That gets around the roll to the right or roll to the left problem on takeoff. (The 22A doesn't do that at all, so I think it's a Walkera 4 trait)

Once it's up, get it tail in, and get it to hover quick! Make sure there are no walls within 3 metres... They are a bad distraction.

Cut some of the remaining tab from the swashplate before making the spring-wire repair. Mine goes in as far as the bearing (almost touches, and is certainly below it) and is hot-melted in about 1.5mm... Almost in the middle of the plastic...

You can get signal from the Crystal socket if you like. Anyway, take a photo of the underside (chip side) of the controller. I'll email you so you have a return address.

To Oops - I finally solved the vibration/oscillation problem. Even though the main blades are identical in size and shape, I experimented with adding some weight (small piece of wire) taped to one of the blades. Believe it or not, I was now able to hold the helicopter while powering it up with almost no vibration. It was then stable enough to lift off and hover a bit without trying to shake itself to pieces. I also marked the middle of the blade tips so I could line them up better, and ran through a couple battery charges with "near the ground" flying (still using the training kit ). Hopefully there won't be a breeze next time and I can get a longer hover under control. (Hard to imagine I could control this enough to fly in the house, though.) Thanks again for all the info.

Hi Coolgti

You only have to open and solder the Zhen Hua 6 channels that come with the Walkera 22a and 35. The Walkera 4 channel works just fine via the serial interface.

Hi Iron1800,

What is your progress on trying to get the 6ch Walkera transmitter to sync up with the flight sim? I am in the same situation and the supplied cord (serial version) will not work with PPJoy. Any instructions for your success is appreciated.

I am not sure if Walkera 6ch is the same transmitter as ESky 6ch, but for the latter there's an off the shelf solution:

This de-CCPM interface decouples the CCPM-mixed signal and feeds it to the serial port using the regular FMS PIC serial protocol (i.e. FMS and other sims, which support this protocol, can use this interface without any ppjoy-type drivers).

Iron1800 succeeded about 2 weeks ago following the mods I posted.
He posted me about some issues but worked through them

This mod is only relevant to the (definate) Walkera 22A and (I think) Walkera 35 transmitters. Other transmitters might work...
(I used the same cable circuit with my Futaba as well... Works fine. Different top plug though).

One thing I will mention - Not everyone who has contacted me has had success, and some people have tried this mod with different controllers with
varying degrees of success. To suceed, you will some reasonable soldering skills and some knowledge of electronics. It's a bit harder than a kit.

One thing we all seem to make mistakes on is the placement of the extra plug... So be careful.

Hi pischla,

I've never seen one of those boards before.

The pad on the right seems kinda suspicious... I'd check to see if it's the correct output.

The output is connected to a set of unused pads like that (one GND nearby) on a few transmitters I have seen.

As I can't test the board I can't say for certain, however I suspect that it would be modifyable also.

Although, if it is a new board, maybe the serial works? Try it out in Hyperterminal at 19200 baud, No Parity, 8 Data bits, 1 stopbit.
See if you see anything. If so, then use the serial.

Can you take a larger picture of front and back and send it to me? If I can see where it enters the crystal, I might be able to spot the correct track.

Well, I managed to get some sort of signal from it using your adaptor for the parallell port. I used the svhs connector and got the signal from the pin which I marked red on the previous picture. I loaded ppjoy and configured a "LPT1:PPM interface radio control TX" And then started FMS. Went into analog control and selected joystick interface. When i go into calibration I see the bars hop up and down when I move the sticks like it was an digital control, besides one stick, the fore and aft moves correctly. Maybe it's some timing issue with ppjoy?
How do you set up the software?

Hi Pischla,

It sounds like you're on the right track. If you see full analogue control from any of the signals, you are probably OK. I'm a bit suprised that it seems Digital
in nature, and I'm wondering whether it might be PPJOY seeing a serial input as digital PPM.

However if you are seeing a proportional response (and by that, I mean sensitive to very slight movements of the stick and continuous over the full range) then it's probably the correct output.

PPJOY has an option to map the channels. You probably need to do that.

I had to map mine into X-axis, Throttle, Y-axis and Rudder to work on one PC. I set PPJOY mapping to 4 axis and assigned Axis 1 through to Axis 4 with one of those settings. Then it worked. At first I just set them arbitrarily, but once I could see movement in Joystick setup, I worked out the order.

You also have to set the correct order in FMS too !... Just to make it hard. And you also have to invert some channels.

On the other hand, I plugged the same controller/adaptor into a friends laptop, and it nearly worked first time. So I think the operating system has something to do with it.

Thanks, managed to make it work at last. I had to map the channels throttle, x-axis, rudder, y-axis. Maybe it's because I'm using a mode 2 radio. Also had to remove the crystal to make it work. But still had digital on 3 channels in fms only the second bar was moving as an analog control. Went to control panel and used microsofts joystick calibration and all of a sudden the controls were all analog. then just inverted 2 channels in FMS and it flies beutifully.

Hi Markyb.

Use Pischla's diagram to find the signal point. A ground point is available on the same connector.

Build a circuit like at:

Add an extra 10K resistor in line with the signal wire.

That's about it :)

Add FMS and PPJOY and you're set to go.

Actually I didn't use the extra 10K resistor because there's one on the board between the s-vhs connector and the chip.

BTW: Signal from pin 2 and ground from pin 3.

It may be worth mentioning to those who have gotten the controller to register with PPjoy but won't work in FMS;

FMS doesn't seem to like it if you have more than one joystick plugged in. If I want to use my transmitter in FMS I need to unplug my MS Sidewinder, otherwise FMS doesn't respond to anything :)

Trying to diagnose the connection problems of Zhen Hua to FMS with PPJoy (Com).

Could those who have the Com signal recognized in the PC, but not understood by FMS, do this test and copy the resulting data in this post. Please append any useful data like transmitter and cable type, if any. Some data from those who succesfully connect to FMS or another sim are also useful (Tell us these data are GOOD for the sim).

Test:
Have your transmitter connected to a com port.
Leave sticks to neutral, trims at center and throttle at minimum.
Run http://www.jdm-nivelles.be/fichiers/fms/RS232analyser.exe
Select the correct Com port if not COM1
Select 'Action' in the menu and do: 'Start Comm'
You should see a few lines of data.
e.g: 99 94 236 239 99 181 94 236 239 99 181 94 236 239 99 181 94 236 239 99 181 94 236 239 99 181 94 236 239 99 181 94 236 239 99 181 94 236 239 99 181 94 236 239 99 181 94 236 239

FYI:
The Zhen Hua 5 byte protocol seems to be:
RS232 asynch 19200,8,N,1
synch hex EF = dec 239
4 channels with the sequence of bits reverted

For example, at 19200 FMS (PIC serial) uses
RS232 asynch 19200,8,N,1
synch hexFF = dec 255
n channels with the normal sequence of bits

PPJoy Com should understand the protocol (and does in some cases) and activate a virtual joystick.

A few samples of the modified sequence of bits:

129 = x81 = 1000 0001 rev-> 1000 0001 = x81 = 129 (unchanged)
161 = xA1 = 1010 0001 rev -> 1000 0101 = x85 = 133

This is understood by PPJoy (Com),
and can be tested with a soft by Eric Brouwer http://myweb.absa.co.za/eric.brouwer/PICTester.zip

But there are still problems with some connections.
That's the reason why I ask to look at the protocol data with RS232analyser.

Dear all,

I bought the smarttech aero hawk (item no.:10443). I know it’s able to play the flight simulator (FMS) with using the transmitter (pls see attachment). However, I have no luck to connect the transmitter to my pc no matter how hard I tried. I have read many forums about this kind of problem and I have followed every steps but still………………
1) I have added new joystick with “PPJoy”. In PPJoyCom, it seems that there is no connection between my pc and the transmitter. It shows “Waiting for stream init…..” but no “Reading serial stream” when I selected “Zhen Hua 5 byte protocol” in Serial protocol. How can I sort this out?

Please help!!!!

Hey yoowicked,

Did your cable come with the TX, or did you buy it seperately? At least with Walkera, there seem to be 2 different and incompatible systems, depending on how old the TX is. To make things more intresting, the port on the TX remained the same, as did the "look" of the TX on the outside. The old system provided a serial stream on it's trainer-port and only required the cable to feed this to the proper pins of the DB9-plug. The new system seems to provide the PPM audio-modulation on the trainer-port, which requires a PIC in the cable to translate it into a serial stream. If you see no data at all and you know the cable, TX and serial port are OK, your TX probably provides a PPM-signal while you're using an old-style cable, or you're using the wrong COM-port in PPJoy. If you connect something that provides a valid serial stream, PPJoy should at least see something happening. Even if the data-formatting or BPS-rate are off, it will report invalid sync, but still show that it's reading a serial stream. You may need to purchase a PIC-cable. I got mine (for an Airtronics RD8000) from http://www.milehighwings.com/ . Reasonable prices, good service and fast shipping. I don't see your transmitter-type listed specifically, but it's probably identical to one of the models that is listed. I'd mail them and ask which cable you need.

I've tried the RS232analyser as you mentioned in your previous post but it hang when I selected "Start Comm". Need to use "Ctrl+Alt+Del" to exist the application. So I can't tell you data.

Yes, the cable is come with the package. I'm not sure what model is it, pls see attached pic. Some ppl said they have met the same problem and they suggested that I have to ensure the cable is perfectly connected to both pc and transmitter due to the very poor quality of the standard cable.

Do you have a 'working' COM port? Check your config panel.
RS232analyser hanging at OPEN is strange.
Check also if you have more than one COM.
Maybe you have to select another COM before doing 'start comm'
